Under sink water filtration takes one of three forms: an inline cartridge spliced into the cold line feeding your existing faucet, a multi-stage system pouring through its own dedicated tap, or a reverse osmosis unit for dissolved contaminants. They differ in what they remove, how much plumbing they ask of you, and how much cabinet they consume, and the right pick starts with your water, not the hardware.
The three approaches, plainly
An inline filter is one carbon cartridge cut into the cold supply line: invisible, cheap, and it treats everything your existing faucet pours, at the cost of the cartridge working hard on all of it. A multi-stage system mounts larger cartridges on the cabinet wall and serves a separate drinking-water faucet, so the filtered stream is reserved for drinking and cooking and the cartridges last accordingly. Reverse osmosis adds a membrane, a tank or pump, and a drain connection, stepping up from taste polishing to removing dissolved solids. Effort, cost and capability rise together.
What each approach can and cannot remove
Carbon, the working medium of the first two approaches, is excellent against chlorine, taste and odor, and specific cartridges carry certified claims for named contaminants: check the certification sheet, not the marketing page. What carbon does not do is remove dissolved minerals, salts, nitrates or similar ionic contaminants; that is membrane work, and it is the whole case for RO under a sink. Every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and the EPA maintains a finder for it: read yours first, and let what it flags choose the approach.
The plumbing each one asks of you
The inline option is the gentlest: cut the cold line, push two fittings together, done in under an hour with no new holes. The multi-stage option adds one real task, mounting a faucet through the sink deck or countertop, using a sprayer knockout where one exists. RO adds a third connection, a saddle fitting on the drain for its reject stream, and a tanked unit claims a corner of the cabinet. Choosing for your household
Match the approach to the finding and the kitchen. Chlorine taste on city water, cramped cabinet, no appetite for drilling: inline. A household that drinks a lot of tap water and wants long cartridge life with a proper dedicated tap: multi-stage. A report or lab test flagging dissolved contaminants: RO, and nothing lighter will do the job. Does under sink filtration slow down my faucet?
