What separates them in practice is not the filtration so much as the space, holes and plumbing each one asks of your sink.

Simplest is an inline cartridge spliced into the cold supply, so the main faucet itself pours filtered water: no new holes, but every cold draw, including dish rinsing, burns filter capacity. Next is a filter feeding a dedicated faucet, which reserves the cartridge for drinking and cooking water and needs one hole in the sink deck. The most involved is under-sink RO: a multi-stage unit plus a storage tank or pump, a dedicated faucet, and a drain connection for reject water. What the under-sink space has to accommodate
Measure before buying. A cartridge system needs wall or floor space for its housings plus clearance below them to drop the sump for changes, which is the dimension everyone forgets. An RO system adds a storage tank roughly the size of a small propane cylinder, or a powered pump module on tankless designs. Garbage disposals, pull-out bins and slide-in dishwashers all compete for the same cabinet, and a cramped install that makes filter changes miserable is an install that stops getting maintained. Leaving comfortable service access is part of the specification, not a luxury.
The connections: cold line, faucet hole, drain
Every configuration tees off the cold line with a feed valve, a ten-minute job with modern push-fit adapters. A dedicated faucet needs a deck hole: existing sprayer or soap dispenser holes serve, or one gets drilled. RO adds a drain saddle clamped to the waste pipe above the trap for reject water, positioned away from the disposal's vibration. Pick the treatment level from evidence: your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report, which the EPA requires every community water system to publish, tells city households what actually needs removing, and a lab panel does the same for wells. Then let habits pick the configuration: households that mostly want better-tasting cold water at the main tap suit an inline cartridge; heavy cooking and drinking households get more from a dedicated faucet's reserved capacity; and dissolved-solids problems or maximum coverage point to RO despite its extra plumbing.
