Choosing a water lead filter for your home

A water lead filter is a filter certified specifically for lead reduction, which is a narrower category than it sounds: most carbon filters are not, and a filter that improves taste tells you nothing about lead. Because lead almost always enters at the plumbing rather than the source, the right filter is the one closest to the tap you drink from.

Lead comes from the pipe, not the reservoir

Water leaving a treatment plant is generally lead-free. Lead picks up from lead service lines, lead solder in copper joints, and brass fixtures, dissolving into water that sits in those materials. That is why lead levels are highest first thing in the morning and lowest after running the tap, and why the age of your house matters more than the name of your utility. Every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and the EPA maintains a finder for them, which tells you what the system found at its sampling sites. It does not tell you what your own service line and fixtures contribute, which is a household-specific question.

What actually reduces lead

Three approaches carry credible certification: solid carbon block filters made specifically for lead reduction, reverse osmosis membranes, and distillation. Loose granular carbon, the kind in many cheap cartridges, has channels that let water pass without the contact the job needs. What separates a certified lead filter from an ordinary carbon one is the block density and the additives, and the certification standard the manufacturer had it tested against. Read the performance data sheet rather than the packaging: a filter can be certified for chlorine taste and odor while making no lead claim at all, and both facts can appear on the same box.

Point of use beats whole house here

Because lead is added by the plumbing between the meter and the faucet, a whole-house filter installed where the main enters the building sits upstream of most of the problem. Anything the pipes contribute after that point passes straight through. The effective place for a lead filter is at or under the sink you drink from, or on the faucet itself, so treated water passes through as little plumbing as possible afterward. Replace on schedule, because lead filters fail silently

A lead-certified cartridge has a rated capacity, and past that capacity it can release what it captured back into the water while the taste and flow stay perfectly normal. There is no visual cue at all. Some faucet-mount units include a mechanical counter or an indicator that shuts off flow at end of life, which is a genuinely useful feature for this contaminant. If yours does not, mark the change date on the housing. Also run the tap for a while after any period of stagnation, before and after installing a filter, since that habit reduces the load reaching the cartridge in the first place.

Questions people ask about water lead filter

Does a Brita-style pitcher remove lead?

Only the models explicitly certified for lead reduction do. Standard taste-and-odor cartridges from the same brands do not, so check the specific cartridge rather than the brand name.

Does boiling remove lead?

No. Boiling evaporates water and leaves the lead behind, so the concentration rises slightly. It is a bacteria measure, not a metals measure.

Should I filter hot water for cooking?

Never draw cooking or drinking water from the hot tap. Hot water dissolves lead from plumbing faster, and household filters are built for cold water. Fill from the cold tap and heat it on the stove.

How do I know if I have a lead service line?

Scratch the pipe where it enters the house: lead is dull grey, soft, and turns shiny silver when scratched, and it is not magnetic. Many utilities now publish a service line inventory as well.
