Choosing a water filter for lead

A filter for lead has to be certified for lead specifically, because lead reduction is not something carbon does automatically. Three technologies do it reliably: a carbon block engineered and tested for lead, reverse osmosis, and distillation. Everything else, including most pitchers, most whole-house cartridges and every softener and UV lamp, leaves lead exactly where it found it.

Certification is the claim, not the material

Two carbon block cartridges that look identical can perform completely differently on lead, because lead reduction depends on the media blend, the block density and the tested capacity rather than on being made of carbon. Look for a third-party certification that names lead reduction and states a capacity in gallons, and treat that capacity as a hard replacement schedule. A cartridge run past its rated volume can release accumulated lead rather than simply stopping work.

Point of use beats whole house here

Lead is a swallowing exposure, not a skin one, so the cost-effective place to treat is the kitchen tap rather than the main line. A whole-house filter also sits before most of the plumbing that contributes lead, meaning solder joints, brass fittings and old branches downstream of the filter continue adding it after the water has been treated. Treating at the last point before the glass is the only arrangement that covers the real source.

Reverse osmosis and distillation

Reverse osmosis rejects dissolved lead along with nitrate, arsenic and the rest of the dissolved load, and an under-sink unit is the common household answer where several contaminants are in play. A distiller does the same by phase change and needs no plumbing, which suits a rental. Both are point-of-use, both are slower than a tap, and both need their pre-stages maintained. Neither addresses lead at any tap they are not connected to.

The filter is a control, not the cure

The permanent fix is removing the lead source: the service line, the solder, the brass. Your utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and the EPA maintains a finder for those reports, and service line inventory information is increasingly published there too. Filter consistently in the meantime, including for cooking and for baby formula, and use cold water only, since hot water carries more lead. Questions people ask about filter for lead

Does a standard carbon filter remove lead?

Not unless it is specifically engineered and certified for lead. Ordinary carbon targets chlorine, taste and organics, and lead can pass straight through it.

Should I fit a whole-house filter for lead?

Usually not. Much of the lead enters from plumbing downstream of where a whole-house filter sits, so a certified point-of-use filter at the drinking tap works better.

Can I use hot tap water if I have a lead filter?

Use cold water for drinking and cooking regardless. Hot water dissolves more lead from plumbing, and most lead-certified filters are rated for cold water only.

What happens if I run a lead cartridge past its capacity?

It can stop reducing lead and may release what it has accumulated, so the rated gallon capacity should be treated as a firm replacement point.
