A carbon block filter is activated carbon compressed with a binder into a solid cylinder rather than loose granules in a shell. That construction does two things at once: it adsorbs chlorine, tastes and organic chemicals like any carbon, and it strains mechanically at a fine micron rating, which is why block cartridges can carry certifications for lead and for cysts that loose granular carbon cannot.
Block versus granular carbon
Granular carbon is loose media with channels between the grains, so water can find a path of least resistance and leave with less contact than the bed suggests. A block has no channels: every drop has to travel through the compressed matrix, so contact is uniform and the effective micron rating is genuinely fine. The cost is pressure drop, which is why blocks appear at point of use and in cartridge housings rather than as the whole-house media of choice.
What the micron rating actually means
A block's rating describes the particle size it retains, and the finer ratings are what make cyst reduction possible, since protozoan cysts are physical particles. Finer is not automatically better: a very fine block on dirty feed water blinds off quickly and starves the fixtures of flow, while a coarser block lasts far longer on the same supply. Match the rating to the water and put a sediment cartridge in front of it, which is far cheaper to replace than the carbon.
Certifications are the only claim worth reading
Carbon reduces chlorine and taste inherently, but claims about lead, cysts, volatile organics or PFAS depend entirely on the specific block, its media blend and its tested capacity. Look for a third-party certification naming the contaminant and a rated capacity in gallons, then treat that capacity as the replacement schedule. What carbon never does is soften water, remove nitrate or fluoride, or disinfect, and a block is no exception to any of those.
Changing it on schedule, not on taste
A block does not warn you before it is exhausted. Adsorption capacity fills quietly, and by the time chlorine taste returns the certified reductions have been gone for a while. Follow the rated volume or the calendar interval, whichever comes first, and change sooner if flow has dropped. Is a carbon block better than granular activated carbon?
For point-of-use work, generally yes: uniform contact and fine straining allow lead and cyst certifications. Granular media wins on whole-house flow and pressure drop.
Does a carbon block filter remove lead?
Some do, but only the ones tested and certified for it. Ordinary carbon has no inherent lead capability, so the certification on the specific cartridge is what matters.
Why did my pressure drop after fitting a carbon block?
Blocks restrict flow by design, and a fine one loads up quickly on sediment-bearing water. Add a sediment pre-filter and consider a coarser or larger block.
