A carbon block cartridge is activated carbon compressed with a binder into a solid tube rather than packed in as loose granules. That construction gives it two properties granular carbon does not have: it filters particles mechanically as well as adsorbing chemically, and water cannot find a low resistance path through it.
Why the block form performs better
Loose granular carbon can channel: water finds a route of least resistance between grains and passes through with far less contact than the bed volume suggests. A block cannot channel, because there is no gap to exploit, so every drop takes the same path and gets the same contact. The compressed structure also filters mechanically, typically in the range where cyst reduction claims become possible on absolute rated versions, so one cartridge does two jobs a granular one would need help with.
What it costs you
Pressure drop, and the tighter the block the more of it. That is why blocks dominate point of use work, where flow is modest, and granular carbon dominates whole house beds, where flow is high and restriction is unacceptable. A block also has less carbon by volume than loose granules in the same space, since the binder occupies room, so raw adsorption capacity per cartridge is lower even while performance per pass is better.
Where it belongs
Under sink drinking water systems, where its combination of chemical and mechanical removal is exactly what is wanted. Reverse osmosis pre filtration, where protecting the membrane from chlorine reliably matters far more than pressure drop. And countertop and faucet units, where the small volume makes channelling in granular media a real risk. Where the utility doses chloramine rather than free chlorine, choose a catalytic carbon block, since standard carbon handles chloramine poorly in any form.
Changing it on the right basis
Not on appearance and not on taste. Chlorine removal consumes carbon chemically and the capacity expires with no visible sign, and the last of a spent block still handles the taste threshold after it has stopped removing the bulk. Change on the manufacturer's stated volume, and note the date on the housing. A block that has been left far too long also loses the mechanical benefit as it loads, and pressure drop climbs steadily.
