Carbon cartridges all look much the same in a housing and behave quite differently in service. The choice comes down to three things: whether the media is a solid block or loose granules, whether it is standard or catalytic, and whether the flow at that position gives the water enough contact time for any of it to matter.
Block against granular
A carbon block is media compressed with a binder into a solid wall, so water must pass through the structure rather than around it. Contact is even, performance is predictable, and the block filters mechanically down to its rated particle size, which is how blocks carry certifications for cysts and particulate lead. The cost is pressure drop. Granular cartridges hold loose media, flow far more freely, and are prone to channelling as the bed settles, which suits whole house duty where flow matters more than a certified claim.
Standard against catalytic
Standard activated carbon reduces free chlorine quickly through a surface reaction. Chloramine, which many utilities now use because it survives the distribution network, needs a different and slower chemistry, and the media made for it is catalytic carbon. This is not a marketing grade. A household on a chloraminated supply fitting a standard cartridge will conclude the filter is faulty when it is simply the wrong specification, so check which disinfectant your utility uses before buying anything.
Contact time is the constraint nobody prints
Carbon works by adsorption, and adsorption takes time. A cartridge rated at a generous flow is telling you it will pass that much water, not that it will treat it well at that rate. The same element performs better on a slow point of use tap than on a whole house line at peak draw. If performance is disappointing and the media is right, the answer is usually a larger cartridge or a longer housing rather than a different brand of the same size.
Knowing when it is spent
Exhausted carbon looks identical to fresh carbon, gives no pressure warning, and often no taste warning until well past the point where it stopped working. Worse, a wet cartridge held past capacity is a comfortable place for bacteria to grow. Change on the manufacturer's rated volume and your real use rather than on appearance, and write the fitting date on the housing.
