A granular activated carbon water filter is a bed of loose carbon granules that water flows through, and it works by adsorption: organic molecules, chlorine byproducts and the compounds behind bad taste and odour stick to the enormous internal surface of the carbon. What decides whether it works is not the brand of carbon but the contact time, which is why the same medium performs superbly in a tall tank and poorly in a small cartridge.
Adsorption, and what it does not catch
Carbon holds onto molecules that prefer a carbon surface to water. That covers chlorine, chloramine to a lesser degree, many volatile organic compounds, pesticides, and most taste and odour compounds. It does not remove dissolved hardness, sodium, nitrate, most metals in dissolved form, or bacteria, and a carbon bed will not disinfect anything. Being clear about that boundary saves money: people fit carbon and are then surprised that scale still forms, because hardness is a job for ion exchange. Carbon is the workhorse for taste, smell and organics, and the first stage of many multi-stage systems for exactly that reason.
Granular carbon against a carbon block
Granular carbon is loose media, so water can find preferential paths through it and the contact time varies across the bed. Its advantage is a very low pressure drop and a bed deep enough for real contact time, which suits whole-house duty. A carbon block is powdered carbon compressed into a solid cylinder, so water must pass through the matrix and cannot channel, giving it far better particulate reduction and making it the format most certified health-effects claims are built on. The rough rule is granular for volume and flow at the point of entry, block for certified reduction at the point of use.
Cartridge or backwashing tank
A cartridge of granular carbon in a housing is cheap to buy and simple to change, but it holds a small amount of medium, cannot be cleaned, and packs down over time. A backwashing tank holds a deep bed with a control valve that periodically lifts and rinses the bed, which redistributes the granules, flushes out trapped sediment and keeps the pressure drop stable for years before the carbon itself needs replacing. For a whole house on chlorinated municipal water the tank is usually the better long-term choice, and vendors publish these as sized systems with flow ratings you can match to your peak demand.
Exhaustion is silent, so plan the change
Carbon does not clog and warn you; it simply fills up. Once the surface is saturated the water passes through unchanged and tastes exactly as it did before you fitted the filter, which most households notice only weeks later. Worse, a bed left in service far past exhaustion stays warm and wet and can become a place bacteria grow, which is why chlorinated feeds and periodic backwashing matter. Set a replacement schedule from the rated capacity and your household use, not from appearance. Questions people ask about granular activated carbon water filter
Does granular activated carbon remove lead?
Loose granular carbon is not a reliable lead barrier. Lead reduction claims are normally carried by certified carbon block cartridges or reverse osmosis at a single tap.
Will a carbon filter soften my water?
No. Softening means removing calcium and magnesium by ion exchange. Carbon leaves hardness untouched, so scale will keep forming on kettles and shower glass.
Can carbon handle chloramine as well as chlorine?
It can, but chloramine is far slower to break down, so it needs much longer contact time or a catalytic carbon specifically made for the job.
Does a carbon tank need power or a drain?
A backwashing tank needs a drain connection and a small power supply for the control valve. A simple cartridge housing needs neither, which is why it suits tight spaces.
