GAC water filter: granular activated carbon explained

A GAC water filter uses granular activated carbon, a loose bed of porous carbon particles with an enormous internal surface area. Water flows through the grains and organic compounds, chlorine and many taste and odor problems stick to that surface. It is the most widely used media in household treatment, and its performance depends almost entirely on how long the water is in contact with it.

Granular carbon versus a carbon block

GAC is loose granules; a carbon block is powdered carbon bound into a solid cylinder. The block filters by size as well as by adsorption, so it can be certified for particulates, lead and cysts, but it clogs and costs more pressure. GAC lets water through freely, which suits whole-house flow rates, and in a backwashing tank the bed can be periodically fluffed to break up packing. The trade is channeling: water finds the easy path through loose granules, and untreated water can slip past a bed that is packed unevenly or has been running a long time.

What it takes out

GAC is excellent on free chlorine, disinfection byproducts, and a wide range of organic chemicals including the compounds behind musty, earthy and chemical tastes. Catalytic grades handle chloramine and hydrogen sulfide far better than standard grades. GAC is also one of the accepted technologies for reducing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The EPA's 2024 drinking water rule set maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS and 10 parts per trillion for PFHxS, PFNA and GenX, and its May 2026 proposals keep the PFOA and PFOS limits with a compliance option to 2031 while proposing to rescind the others.

What it does not take out

Carbon does nothing to hardness, so scale, spotting and stiff laundry continue unchanged. It does not remove nitrate, dissolved salts, sodium or most metals in ionic form, and it does not disinfect. Iron that arrives dissolved and oxidizes inside the bed will foul it and cost you pressure. So a GAC filter is a taste, odor and organics device, and pairing it with a softener, an iron filter or reverse osmosis is how households cover the rest.

Contact time, bed depth and sizing

The governing number is how long water stays in the carbon, which comes from the bed volume divided by the flow rate. A tall, deep bed at moderate flow performs far better than a shallow bed at high flow with the same weight of carbon. That is why a whole-house GAC tank outperforms a cartridge on the same water, and why fitting a small cartridge to a house with high simultaneous demand disappoints. Size on your peak flow, not your average, and expect a deeper bed if you are chasing chloramine or organics rather than just chlorine taste.

Exhaustion and replacement

Carbon does not warn you when it is full. Adsorption sites fill gradually, and the first sign is usually chlorine taste returning or an odor coming back. A tank system backwashes to reclassify the bed and flush sediment, which keeps pressure loss down but does not regenerate the carbon: the media is replaced on a schedule, typically measured in years for a whole-house tank and months for a cartridge. Questions people ask about gac water filter

Is GAC better than a carbon block filter?

For whole-house flow, usually yes, because it costs less pressure and holds far more media. For certified lead and cyst reduction at a single tap, a carbon block is the better tool.

Does a GAC filter need backwashing?

Tank-based systems backwash to lift and reclassify the bed and flush trapped sediment. Cartridge GAC filters do not backwash and are simply replaced.

Will GAC remove hardness or iron?

No. Hardness needs ion exchange or reverse osmosis, and iron needs oxidation and filtration. Iron reaching a carbon bed tends to foul it.

How do I know when the carbon is spent?

Returning chlorine taste or odor is the practical signal. Since carbon gives no warning otherwise, replace tank media and cartridges on the maker's schedule rather than waiting.
