What carbon genuinely handles
Activated carbon has an enormous internal surface area that organic molecules stick to, and it reacts chemically with chlorine rather than merely trapping it. That gives it reliable performance on chlorine, on chlorination byproducts, on the taste and odor compounds that make water taste of pool or of earth, and on a broad range of organic chemicals including many solvents and pesticides. Catalytic carbon extends this to chloramine and to hydrogen sulfide, which standard carbon handles poorly.
What passes straight through
Anything dissolved and inorganic: calcium and magnesium, so carbon never softens water, plus sodium, nitrate, fluoride, arsenic and sulfate. Carbon does not disinfect, so bacteria are not its job, and a wet carbon bed can actually support growth if it sits unused. Lead and cysts are removed only by specific engineered blocks that have been tested for it, not by carbon as a category. If a system claims all of the above from carbon alone, the claim is doing the selling.
The three forms and where each belongs
Granular carbon in a tank is the whole-house form, sized in cubic feet, giving capacity and low pressure drop at household flow. A carbon block is a compressed cartridge for point-of-use, giving uniform contact and fine straining at the cost of flow. Carbon fiber and small cartridge forms serve pitchers, faucet mounts and fridge filters. Same media, three very different jobs, and using the point-of-use form on a whole house is the classic sizing mistake.
Exhaustion is silent, so schedule it
Carbon does not clog and it does not warn you. Adsorption sites fill up, performance falls away, and the water looks exactly the same as it did on day one. Whole-house media beds run for years and point-of-use cartridges for months, and both should be replaced on the rated volume or the calendar rather than on taste. Questions people ask about carbon filter for water
Does a carbon filter soften water?
No. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, which carbon does not adsorb. Scale on kettles and fixtures continues unless a softener is fitted.
Does carbon remove bacteria?
No, and a damp carbon bed left unused can support growth. Microbiological risk is handled by UV, chlorination or a membrane, not by carbon.
What is catalytic carbon for?
It handles chloramine and hydrogen sulfide, which ordinary granular carbon treats poorly. If your utility uses chloramine, that is the media to specify.
How do I know when carbon is exhausted?
You generally cannot tell by looking or tasting until it is well past its useful life, so replace on the rated volume or the stated calendar interval.
