Carbon water filter: what it takes out and what it leaves behind

A carbon water filter works by adsorption: contaminants stick to the enormous internal surface area of the carbon as water passes through. It is the workhorse of household treatment because the things people notice most, chlorine taste, chemical smells and a general staleness, are exactly what carbon handles well. It is also widely oversold, because the list of things it does not touch is long and rarely printed on the box.

Adsorption, and why contact time matters

Carbon does not strain contaminants out the way a sediment filter does. Molecules adhere to the pore structure, which means the water has to stay in contact with the carbon long enough for that to happen. Push water through too fast, or through too little carbon, and performance collapses even though the filter looks fine and flows freely. That is why whole-house carbon systems use large media beds rather than cartridges, and why a small cartridge on a high flow line disappoints.

Standard carbon, catalytic carbon and carbon block

Granular activated carbon in a bed or cartridge handles free chlorine, taste and odor and many organic compounds. Catalytic carbon is treated to break down chloramine, the longer lasting disinfectant many utilities now use, which standard carbon struggles with. Carbon block compresses fine carbon into a solid form, giving better contact and finer filtration, and it is the format that carries certifications for lead and cyst reduction. Which one you need depends on your utility's disinfectant and your certified claim.

What carbon does not remove

Carbon does not soften water: hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium and it passes straight through, so scale keeps forming. It does not remove nitrate, and it is not a disinfectant, so it should never be treated as protection against bacteria. Dissolved metals other than those a certified block is rated for largely pass through, as do most dissolved solids. If your problem is scale, staining or a microbiological finding, carbon is the wrong purchase however good it makes the water taste.

Placement and replacement

On a whole-house system, carbon sits after sediment removal so grit does not blind the bed, and after iron treatment so oxidized metal does not coat it. On a well with a sulfur odor, carbon alone exhausts quickly and oxidation should come first. Carbon gives no warning when it is finished: flow stays normal and the taste returns gradually. Replace on the manufacturer's schedule, shortened for heavily chlorinated supplies, and check your utility's annual report to see which disinfectant you are actually filtering. Does a carbon water filter remove chloramine?

Standard activated carbon reduces it slowly and inefficiently. Catalytic carbon is the media designed for chloramine, so check which disinfectant your utility uses before choosing, since many systems have moved from free chlorine to chloramine.

Can carbon filters remove hardness or scale?

No. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and carbon adsorbs organic molecules rather than capturing dissolved minerals. Scale control needs a softener or a dedicated scale-control conditioner instead.

Do carbon filters grow bacteria?

A wet carbon bed left unused can support bacterial growth, which is why manufacturers specify replacement intervals and why systems left standing for weeks should be flushed thoroughly before the water is used for drinking.

How do I know when carbon is exhausted?

There is no visible sign and flow does not change, so the practical indicator is the return of chlorine taste or odor. That is why carbon is replaced on a schedule rather than on symptoms, unlike a sediment filter.
