Carbon water filters for home use all rely on the same mechanism, adsorption onto a huge internal surface, but they arrive in very different packages: pitchers, faucet mounts, under-sink cartridges, refrigerator filters and whole-house tanks. Choosing well is mostly a question of how much water needs treating and where the problem shows up.
Granular carbon versus carbon block
Granular activated carbon is loose media, either poured into a tank or packed into a cartridge. Water flows through the spaces between the grains, which keeps pressure drop low but allows channeling: over time the flow can carve preferred paths and bypass much of the media. A carbon block is the same carbon compressed with a binder into a solid wall the water must pass through. Blocks give better and more consistent contact, can be manufactured to a fine particle rating and can be certified for specific reductions such as lead or cysts. They cost more and restrict flow more, which is why tanks favor granular and point-of-use cartridges favor block.
Matching the format to the complaint
If the problem is only the taste of drinking water, a pitcher or faucet unit is proportionate and cheap. If it is the taste and clarity of everything the kitchen produces, including ice and coffee, an under-sink cartridge with a dedicated faucet or an inline feed to the refrigerator is a better fit. If the chlorine smell hits you in the shower or you want the disinfectant out of the water reaching the water heater and washing machine, only a whole-house system at the main line does that. The rule is simple: treat at the point where the problem is experienced, and size for the flow at that point.
Catalytic carbon and what your utility uses
Many utilities disinfect with chloramine rather than free chlorine because it persists longer in the distribution system. Standard activated carbon is far less effective against chloramine, and households that buy a generic carbon filter for a chloramine supply often report that the smell is only partly reduced. Catalytic carbon is processed to be much more reactive with chloramine and with hydrogen sulfide. Living with a carbon filter
Carbon has a finite capacity and it exhausts silently. Nothing changes color, the flow does not drop, and the water keeps tasting fine for a while after the media has stopped adsorbing much. Worse, a badly overdue cartridge can become a place for bacteria to grow in a warm, nutrient-rich, chlorine-free environment. So carbon is managed by the calendar and the gallon count, not by observation. Write the change date on the housing, keep a spare cartridge in the cupboard, and if a system has sat unused for a while, flush it thoroughly before drinking from it again.

Do carbon filters remove hardness?
No. Calcium and magnesium are dissolved minerals that pass straight through carbon, so scale and spotting continue until you soften or condition the water.
Are carbon block filters worth the extra cost?
For drinking water, generally yes. The compressed structure prevents channeling and allows certification for specific reductions that loose granular media cannot claim.
Can a carbon filter make water unsafe?
