Standard activated carbon works mostly by adsorption: contaminants stick to the enormous internal surface area of the media until that surface is full. Standard carbon reduces chloramine only slowly and needs a great deal of contact time to make progress, so a small cartridge treats it poorly. Catalytic carbon breaks chloramine down far more effectively at the same contact time, which is why whole house systems aimed at chloramine specify it. Hydrogen sulfide and well water smell
The other application is the rotten egg smell on well water, which is hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the supply. Catalytic carbon promotes the oxidation of that gas so it can be held in the bed, which handles light to moderate levels well. Heavy sulfide loads are a different job: they overwhelm a carbon bed quickly and are better treated by aeration, ozone or chlorine injection followed by a filter, with carbon as a polishing stage behind. The distinction to make before buying is whether the smell is mild and constant or strong enough to be noticed from another room, because that decides whether one tank will be enough.
How the system is built and maintained
The usual form is a tank filled with the media and a control valve that backwashes it periodically to lift the bed, prevent packing and flush trapped particles to a drain. Does catalytic carbon remove hardness?
