A GAC filter is a bed of granular activated carbon, and its job is adsorption: chlorine, many taste and odor compounds, and a wide range of organic chemicals stick to the carbon's enormous internal surface as water flows through. It is the workhorse media behind most whole-house filters, faucet filters and the polishing stages of reverse osmosis systems, and it is also the media people most often run past its useful life.
How adsorption works, and what GAC is good at
Activated carbon is carbon processed to be riddled with microscopic pores, which gives a small tank an enormous contact surface. Dissolved organic molecules and chlorine are attracted to that surface and held there, so the water passing through leaves them behind. GAC excels at chlorine, chlorination byproducts, solvents, pesticides and the compounds behind most taste and odor complaints. It does not remove hardness, dissolved metals like lead in any reliable way without specialty formulation, nitrates, or microorganisms. It is a chemistry filter, not a strainer and not a disinfectant.
GAC versus carbon block
Both are activated carbon; the difference is form. GAC is loose granules, which means low pressure drop and good flow, but water can channel through the bed and shorten contact with the media. Carbon block is powdered carbon compressed into a solid cylinder, which forces intimate contact and adds mechanical particle filtration, at the cost of more flow restriction. Whole-house tanks and high-flow applications favor GAC; under-sink drinking water cartridges often favor block. Many systems use both in sequence.
Match the carbon to your disinfectant
The EPA requires every community water system to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for locating yours. Read it before buying, because it tells you whether your utility disinfects with chlorine or chloramine. Standard GAC handles chlorine well but is slow against chloramine; for chloramine you want catalytic carbon, a modified GAC made for exactly that job. Buying the wrong variant is the most common reason a new carbon filter fails to fix a taste complaint.
Knowing when GAC is spent
Carbon does not clog so much as fill up: once the adsorption sites are occupied, water passes through untreated and the filter gives no visible warning. The first symptom is usually the return of the chlorine taste or odor the filter was bought to remove. Replace media or cartridges on the manufacturer's schedule rather than waiting for symptoms, and shorten the interval if your household uses more water than the sizing assumed. Questions people ask about gac filter
Does a GAC filter remove bacteria or viruses?
No. Activated carbon has no disinfecting action, and a mature carbon bed can even harbor harmless bacteria. Microbiological problems call for UV treatment or another disinfection step, with carbon handling chemistry.
Does GAC remove hardness or dissolved minerals?
No. Calcium, magnesium and most dissolved salts pass straight through carbon. Hardness needs ion exchange softening, and broad dissolved-solids reduction needs reverse osmosis or deionization.
Is GAC or carbon block better?
Neither is universally better. GAC flows freely and suits whole-house tanks; carbon block forces better contact and adds particle filtration, which suits drinking-water cartridges. Many good systems stack both.
