Carbon cartridges look interchangeable and are not. The same housing will accept a solid block, a loose granular fill or a catalytic version, and each behaves differently in flow, in what it captures and in how long it lasts. Choosing correctly is a matter of matching three things: the target, the flow rate, and the position in the system.
Carbon block: even contact, mechanical filtration too
A block is carbon compressed with a binder into a solid wall, so water has to pass through the structure rather than finding a path around it. Contact is even, performance is predictable, and the block also filters mechanically down to its rated particle size, which is how blocks can carry certifications for cysts and particulate lead that loose media cannot. The cost is pressure drop: blocks restrict flow more than granular fills, which matters at whole house scale and much less at a single tap.
Granular activated carbon: flow, at the cost of channelling
A granular cartridge is loose media held in a shell. Water finds the easiest route through it, so contact is less even and channelling is possible, particularly as the bed settles. In exchange the pressure drop is low, which suits whole house duty where flow matters and the target is chlorine taste and odor rather than a certified particulate claim. It is also cheaper per volume of carbon. For a point of entry filter on municipal water, granular is often the sensible choice.
Catalytic carbon: the one for chloramine
Catalytic carbon is media whose surface has been modified to drive the slower reaction that reduces chloramine. This is not a marketing grade; standard carbon reduces chloramine slowly and incompletely, and a household on a chloraminated supply with a standard cartridge will conclude their filter has failed. If the utility's annual report names chloramine, specify catalytic media and allow more contact time, which usually means a larger cartridge or a slower flow than the same house would need for free chlorine.
Sizing, sequencing and replacement
Sediment always comes before carbon, so particles do not blind the carbon's surface and waste the media inside. Size for the flow the position actually sees, not the average. And replace on throughput rather than appearance, because exhausted carbon looks exactly like new carbon, gives no pressure warning, and a wet cartridge held past capacity is a comfortable place for bacteria to grow.
