A carbon block is compressed media with a binder, and that solid structure is what separates it from loose granular carbon: water has to pass through the material rather than finding a path around it. That gives even contact and, crucially, mechanical filtration to a rated particle size, which is why blocks carry certifications granular carbon cannot.
Two mechanisms in one element
Adsorption removes chlorine, taste, odour and many organic compounds onto the carbon's internal surface, which is what all carbon does. Mechanical filtration removes particles down to the block's rated size, which loose media cannot do because water channels around granules. That combination is why a block can be certified for protozoan cysts and for particulate lead, and it is the reason a block is the usual choice for point of use drinking water where a specific claim matters.
Rating type, which decides the claim
A nominal rating means most particles at the stated size are captured and some pass. An absolute rating means essentially all of them are, and only absolute supports a specific health related claim. Two blocks printed with the same micron figure can therefore differ in what they are permitted to claim, so check which kind of rating is stated. For anything beyond taste, look the model up in a certifier's published listing rather than reading the packaging.
The cost: pressure drop
Forcing water through a solid structure restricts flow considerably more than passing it through loose granules, and the restriction grows as the block loads. At a point of use tap that is barely noticeable. At the point of entry it matters a great deal, which is why whole house carbon is usually granular or a media bed rather than a block, and why a block fitted on a whole house line often produces the complaint that the shower has weakened.
Catalytic blocks and the chloramine case
Standard carbon reduces free chlorine quickly and chloramine slowly and incompletely, because chloramine is deliberately stable. Catalytic carbon blocks are made for that reaction and are the correct specification where a utility uses chloramine, which its annual report will state. Even then, contact time matters, so a larger block or a slower flow performs better than a small one. Sediment always goes ahead of a block.
