Adding well water chlorine for disinfection or iron removal

Chlorine is added to a private well for two quite different reasons: to disinfect water carrying bacteria, and to oxidize dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide so a filter downstream can catch them. Both jobs need the same three things, and skipping any one of them produces a system that delivers chlorine to the house and treatment to nothing.

Shock chlorination against continuous dosing

These are not the same procedure. Shock chlorination is a one off treatment, a strong dose introduced into the well and the plumbing, left to stand and then flushed out, used after a positive coliform test, after work on the well, or after flooding. Continuous chlorination is a metering pump injecting a small measured dose into the line whenever water flows, used where contamination recurs or where oxidation duty is ongoing. Shock first and retest twice: a well that stays clean afterwards had an entry problem you have now closed.

The three things a continuous system needs

A metering pump tied to the well pump or a flow switch, so solution is injected only while water is moving rather than on a timer. A contact tank sized to give the reaction time to complete at peak flow, which is the component most often omitted and the reason many installations fail. And a filter to catch whatever the chlorine oxidized, followed by activated carbon to remove the residual chlorine and its taste before the water reaches the taps.

Fix the wellhead before dosing continuously

Bacterial contamination is usually an entry problem rather than an aquifer problem. Check the casing extends well above grade with the ground sloping away, that the sanitary seal and cap are intact and vermin proof, and that surface water cannot reach the annulus. Look at septic separation, abandoned wells nearby and livestock access. The EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no one else will find these for you, and continuous chlorination leaves the route open.

Keeping the dose honest

Hypochlorite solution loses strength in storage, faster in warmth and light, so the delivered dose drifts down over the life of a tank. Test the residual at an outlet periodically and after every solution change rather than setting the pump once. The injection check valve scales and blocks, which is the most common failure and shows as a pump running with nothing delivered.
