A pH thermometer is a combined instrument reading both pH and temperature, and the reason the two are packaged together is that a pH measurement taken without knowing the temperature is a number of limited value. The electrode's response changes with temperature, and so does the water's own pH, and the two effects are separate.

The two temperature effects

The first is instrumental: the electrode's voltage response to a given pH varies with temperature, and this is what automatic temperature compensation corrects for, using the built in probe. The second is real: the pH of the water itself genuinely changes as it warms or cools, because the equilibria in solution shift. No meter can compensate for that, because it is not an error, and it is why samples must be compared at similar temperature rather than corrected to a common one.

Why it matters on a private supply

Because pH decides whether other treatment works. Iron and manganese oxidize slowly or not at all below a certain pH, so an aeration or oxidizing filter underperforms on acidic water until it is corrected. Chlorine disinfects markedly less effectively at high pH. Penn State Extension notes that softeners can remove dissolved iron only when pH is above 6.7, hardness is between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, so a reading near that threshold changes the design.

Taking a reading properly

Sample from a cold tap with the aerator removed, after running until the water is cold and steady, so you measure the supply rather than what stood in the pipes. Read promptly, because water that has stood in an open container takes up carbon dioxide from the air and its pH drifts, sometimes noticeably within minutes. Let both the pH and the temperature readings settle rather than taking the first number, and record the temperature alongside the pH every time.

Calibration is not optional

pH electrodes drift and age, and an uncalibrated meter can be confidently wrong. Calibrate against fresh buffer solutions at two points spanning the range you care about, at the temperature you will be measuring at, and repeat regularly rather than once a year. Store the electrode wet in the manufacturer's solution, never dry and never in distilled water, which damages it. Replace the electrode when calibration stops holding.
