A water test kit for well water is only worth buying if it covers the things a well actually goes wrong with, and if you take the sample properly. The two failure modes are equally common: a kit that tests for taste nuisances but not bacteria, and a good kit ruined by a sample taken from a garden hose.
What a well kit needs to cover
Start from what changes a decision. Coliform and E. coli tell you whether the well is sealed and whether you need disinfection. Nitrate matters most where there is farming or a septic field nearby, and it matters most of all to infants. Hardness, iron and manganese decide whether you are buying a softener, an iron filter or both. Sulfide explains the rotten egg smell. pH decides whether you need a neutralizer and whether other equipment will even work properly. Beyond that, arsenic, lead, uranium and radon are worth adding wherever local geology or old plumbing puts them on the table. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so the panel you choose is the only panel anyone will run.
Strips, drop kits and mail-in labs are not the same product
Test strips are indicators. They are quick, they cost little, and they are honest about broad questions: is this water hard, is there any free chlorine, is the pH low. They are not precise, they fade, and they are read by eye against a color chart, so two people can read the same strip differently. Titration drop kits for hardness and iron are a step up in repeatability and are what most installers actually carry. A mail-in laboratory kit is a different category: you collect into supplied sterile bottles, ship the same day, and get numbers a treatment dealer will size equipment from and a mortgage lender or buyer will accept. For a bacteria result there is no meaningful home substitute, because culturing needs a sterile bottle and a controlled incubation.
Taking the sample without wrecking it
Most bad results are bad sampling. Use an indoor cold tap that has no aerator screen, no filter and no hose on it, ideally the kitchen tap or a dedicated sample tap ahead of any treatment. Remove any aerator. For bacteria, sanitize the spout, then run the cold water for several minutes to draw fresh water from the well rather than water that has sat in the pressure tank. Wash your hands, do not rinse the sterile bottle, do not touch the inside of the cap or its rim, fill to the line and cap it immediately. Chill it and ship it the same day, because a bacteria sample that sits warm over a weekend tells you about the courier, not the well. Reading the result, then deciding
A test result is a shopping list, not a verdict. Group what comes back into three buckets. Health items, such as bacteria, nitrate, arsenic or lead, set the treatment you cannot skip and often justify a lab retest to confirm before you spend anything. Nuisance items, such as hardness, iron, manganese and sulfide, set the equipment that protects the house and makes the water pleasant. Enabling items, chiefly pH and dissolved iron, decide whether the equipment you are considering will even work as advertised on your water. Can a home test kit detect bacteria in well water?
Some kits include a presence-absence coliform culture, which is a useful screen. A confirmed result still needs a certified laboratory with sterile sample bottles.
How often should a private well be tested?
Most owners test bacteria and nitrate annually, and after any flood, repair or change in taste, color or smell. Nobody else is testing a private well for you.
Can I sample from an outside spigot or a garden hose?
