Home well water test kit: what it covers and what it misses

A home well water test kit is a useful screening tool and a poor substitute for a laboratory panel. Strips and drop kits give quick, workable readings for hardness, pH, iron and chlorine, and they cannot give you a defensible number for the contaminants that would actually change how you treat the water.

Why well owners have to test at all

The EPA is explicit that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, relies on private wells, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. No utility is sampling your well, no annual report arrives, and nothing in the water announces itself. Testing is not a precaution for well owners, it is the only information channel that exists about the water the household drinks.

What a home kit does well

Home kits are genuinely good at a handful of parameters where the chemistry is simple and the concentrations are relatively large. Hardness by titration gives a number good enough to size a softener. pH strips are adequate for spotting acidic water that is attacking copper pipe. Iron and manganese drop tests give a useful order of magnitude for planning a treatment stage. Total chlorine matters if you run a chlorinator. Some kits include a bacteria presence test that produces a color change, and while it is not a count, a positive result is a strong reason to escalate to a lab immediately.

What only a laboratory can tell you

Arsenic, nitrate, lead, uranium, radon, PFAS and a coliform count with confirmation all need instrument analysis in an accredited lab. These are the results that carry weight in a real estate transaction, that a treatment designer will size equipment from, and that you would want before deciding whether a household drinks the water. The interference problem also matters: well water rich in iron or sulfide throws off several home test chemistries, so the wells that most need accurate readings are the ones where strips are least trustworthy. Treat a home kit result on those parameters as a prompt, never as an answer.

Sampling so the result means something

A bad sample invalidates a good test. Take water from a cold tap ahead of any treatment equipment, or the result describes your equipment rather than your well. Run the tap long enough to pull fresh water from the well rather than water that has stood in the pipes, unless you are deliberately testing for a first-draw metal result. Do not rinse a preserved lab bottle, cap it immediately, keep it cool and get it back inside the stated holding time. Sample after heavy rain as well as in dry weather if the well is shallow, because surface influence shows up in wet conditions.
