An at home water test kit is a screening tool, and it is genuinely useful within its limits. Strips and drop kits give you hardness, chlorine, pH, alkalinity and a rough read on iron and nitrate in a few minutes on the kitchen counter, which is enough to size a softener or confirm a suspicion. What they cannot do is give you a defensible number for lead, bacteria, arsenic or PFAS, and knowing which side of that line your question falls on saves both money and false reassurance.
Strips, drop kits and mail-in kits are three different products
Test strips carry reagent pads you dip and compare against a color chart. They are fast, cheap and coarse, and reading the color is subjective under kitchen lighting. Titration drop kits, the type where you add drops until the sample changes color and count them, are noticeably more accurate for hardness and alkalinity because you are counting a quantity rather than judging a shade. Mail-in kits are a different animal entirely: you collect into supplied bottles, some containing preservative, and post them to a laboratory that runs proper instrumental methods. All three get sold as home water test kits, and they answer very different questions.
What a home kit measures well
Hardness is the standout. A drop kit gives you a hardness number good enough to size a softener and to know which band you are in, and you can retest after treatment to confirm the unit is working. Free chlorine tells you whether your carbon filter is still doing its job. pH matters on wells, where acidic water corrodes copper and leaves blue-green staining, and it is also the number that decides whether a softener can carry your iron. Total dissolved solids from a handheld meter is a rough indicator of overall mineral content and a quick way to check whether an RO membrane is still rejecting. These are all repeatable measurements you can act on.
What a home kit cannot honestly tell you
Bacteria needs an incubated culture, and the presence-absence vials sold for home use tell you something happened without telling you what or how much. Lead needs a laboratory instrument, because the concentrations that matter are far below what a color change can resolve. Arsenic strips exist and are prone to interference. PFAS is not testable at home at all, at any price. Treat a home kit result on any of these as a prompt to send a sample to a certified lab rather than as an answer, and never let a clean strip talk you out of a lab test you had a reason to want.
Well owners have a different testing burden
If you are on a private well, nobody is testing your water but you. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, relies on them, and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. City customers start from a different place: the EPA notes that every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for it, so a home kit is confirming what the utility already told you rather than discovering it.
Sampling properly, or the kit is wasted
Results are only as good as the sample. Take it from a tap you actually drink from, remove any aerator or screen if the instructions say so, and note whether you flushed the line first, because a first-draw sample and a flushed sample answer different questions about your plumbing.
