A well water test kit has to cover more ground than a city water kit, because nothing has been done to the water before it reaches your tap. Bacteria and nitrate are the baseline every year. Beyond those, what you order depends on local geology, nearby land use and what your plumbing is made of. The kit that arrives as a mail-in laboratory package is the one that answers health questions; strips are for monitoring afterwards.
Why well owners carry the whole burden
The EPA states that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population, more than 43 million people in over 23 million households, depends on one. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. There is no annual report, no notice when something changes and no agency sampling on your behalf. Testing is the only visibility you get.
The baseline panel and the local additions
Total coliform and E. coli tell you whether surface water is reaching the well. Nitrate matters especially where there is agriculture or a septic field nearby, and it is a serious risk to infants. To those, add what your area is known for: arsenic in some aquifers, radon in others, manganese, fluoride, uranium, or agricultural chemicals near cropland. Ask your county health department or extension office what local wells commonly show, since that is cheaper than testing for everything blindly.

A mail-in kit supplies sterile bottles, preservatives where needed, a form and a prepaid shipping label, and returns laboratory results against health benchmarks. That is what you need for bacteria, nitrate and metals. Strips and reagent kits are useful for hardness, iron, pH and chlorine, which drive equipment sizing rather than safety decisions, and for checking that installed treatment is still working between annual lab tests. Both have a place; they answer different questions.
Sampling is the part that goes wrong
Bacteria samples need a sanitized tap with the aerator removed, sterile technique, and shipping so the lab receives them within its holding time, usually meaning you post early in the week and not before a holiday. Metals samples may need a first-draw or a flushed sample depending on what is being asked. Never rinse a bottle that contains preservative. Keep samples cold in transit. How often should a private well be tested?
At least once a year for bacteria and nitrate, and again after flooding, well or pump repairs, nearby construction or drilling, or any change in taste, smell or appearance. A broader panel every few years catches slower changes.
Can a home test kit detect bacteria in well water?
Some presence-absence kits give an indication, but a certified laboratory result is what you need to act on, particularly if the household includes infants, elderly or immunocompromised people. Strips cannot detect bacteria at all.
What should I test for if there is farmland nearby?
Nitrate is the first priority, along with bacteria, and pesticide or herbicide screening is worth considering depending on what is grown. Local health departments usually know which agricultural chemicals show up in area wells.
Do I need to test if I already have a treatment system?
Yes, and arguably more often. Treatment fails silently: media exhausts, lamps age, valves stick. Testing treated water annually is the only proof the system is still doing what it was installed to do.
