Every real PFAS test is a mail-in kit: the lab sends bottles and instructions, you collect the sample exactly as told, and an instrument measures the compounds at extremely low concentrations. There is no consumer device that can detect PFAS at the levels that matter.
Why the levels involved rule out a home strip
The federal limits give a sense of the scale involved. The 2024 rule set maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 parts per trillion for PFHxS, PFNA and GenX. Proposals published in May 2026 keep the PFOA and PFOS limits with a compliance option extending to 2031 and propose rescinding the others. Detecting anything at parts per trillion requires laboratory instruments and rigorous controls, which is why every credible kit is a sample-collection kit and why any product claiming to show PFAS from a color change should be treated with suspicion.
How the sampling actually works
The lab ships specific bottles, often with a preservative already inside, and the instructions are strict because contamination is trivially easy at these concentrations. Typical requirements: do not rinse the bottles, do not overfill past the line, wear the gloves supplied, avoid contact with anything containing fluoropolymers, and do not use waterproof clothing, cosmetics or fabric-treated gloves on sampling day. Collect from a cold tap that has run for the specified time, seal, chill and ship the same day inside the hold time. Most invalid results are sampling errors rather than laboratory errors, so read the sheet twice.
Choosing between a screen and a full panel
Kits differ in how many compounds they report. A short panel covering the regulated compounds is cheaper and answers the compliance question for most households. A broad panel covering dozens of compounds is what you want if you are near a known source such as a firefighting training area, a plating or textile plant, or a landfill, because the compound present may not be one of the regulated few. Ask the lab whether it is accredited for the drinking water method it is using, and ask for the reporting limit, because a result of not detected only means anything relative to that limit.
What to do with the number
If you are on a community water system, compare with the utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report before spending anything, because the utility may already be treating or planning to. If you are on a private well, nobody is testing for you and the result is entirely your call to act on.
