A PFAS test kit is not a color changing strip. Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances are measured in vanishingly small concentrations by laboratory instruments, so what you buy is a sampling kit: certified bottles, instructions and prepaid shipping to an accredited lab. The hard part is not the test, it is collecting the sample without contaminating it with the very chemicals you are looking for.
Why there is no strip test for PFAS
PFAS are regulated at parts per trillion, a scale far below what any color reaction can resolve. Laboratories use liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry, following defined EPA drinking water methods, to separate and identify individual compounds. That is why every credible home PFAS product is a mail in kit, and why anything sold as an instant PFAS dip test should be treated with suspicion. The kit's job is simply to get your water into the lab's hands in an unaltered state.
Sampling without contaminating the sample
PFAS are used in nonstick coatings, waterproof fabrics, food packaging and some plumbing tape, so the sampling protocol is mostly about keeping those away from the bottle. Wash your hands with plain soap and skip cosmetics and hand cream that morning. Do not wear waterproof or stain resistant clothing while sampling. Do not let the bottle touch a nonstick surface or a food wrapper, do not rinse the bottle, and do not remove any preservative already inside. Remove aerators only if instructed, take the sample from a cold tap after the run time the lab specifies, and ship it the same day with the supplied ice packs.
What the numbers on the report mean
Your result will list individual compounds rather than one PFAS figure. The EPA's 2024 drinking water rule set maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 parts per trillion for PFHxS, PFNA and GenX chemicals. Proposals announced in May 2026 would keep the PFOA and PFOS limits while extending a compliance option to 2031 and rescinding the limits for the others. Compare your named compounds against those figures, and note that a limit applies to public water systems rather than to a private well.
Private wells are your own responsibility
If you are on a well, nobody is testing it for you. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, relies on them. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. What to do with a positive result
Two treatment routes are established for household PFAS reduction: granular activated carbon and reverse osmosis, with anion exchange resin used in some applications. Choose certified equipment tested against a PFAS reduction claim rather than a generic filter, size it to where you drink and cook rather than the whole house if budget is limited, and retest after installation to confirm the unit is doing what the label says. Then retest periodically, because media exhausts silently and gives no taste or flow warning when it stops working.
