A PFAS filter system is a treatment stage chosen specifically to reduce per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and only three approaches are routinely credited with doing it: granular activated carbon, ion exchange resin designed for these compounds, and reverse osmosis. Everything else in a typical water treatment lineup, softeners and sediment filters included, is aimed at other problems and should not be expected to help here.
What the federal rule now says
The EPA set enforceable maximum contaminant levels for several of these compounds in 2024: 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 parts per trillion for PFHxS, PFNA and GenX chemicals. In May 2026 the agency proposed keeping the PFOA and PFOS limits while extending a compliance option to 2031, and proposed rescinding the limits for the others. Those numbers apply to public water systems, not to a private well, so a well owner is comparing a lab result against a benchmark rather than against a legal obligation anyone else has to meet.
The three technologies with a track record
Granular activated carbon in a large bed adsorbs the longer-chain compounds well and is the usual choice where a whole-house approach is wanted, because it handles volume without a drain connection. Anion exchange resin made for these compounds captures them on charged sites and tends to hold performance longer on the shorter-chain molecules that slip past carbon early. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink rejects the broadest range of them but treats only the water going to one faucet. Many households end up with carbon on the main line for bathing and laundry, and reverse osmosis at the sink for drinking and cooking.
Sizing, contact time and the replacement schedule
Carbon does not work by catching particles, it works by contact. A bed that is too small for the flow rate through the house gives the water too little time against the media and lets compounds pass even though the cartridge looks clean and the pressure drop is normal. That is the single most common way a whole-house install underperforms. Because there is no visible cue that the bed is exhausted, replacement runs on a calendar and on retesting, not on appearance. Budget for a post-install lab test and periodic retests, and treat the media change interval quoted by the manufacturer as a ceiling rather than a target.
Test first, then buy
These compounds are odorless and tasteless at the levels being regulated, so nothing about how the water looks or tastes tells you whether you have a problem. A household on a public supply can start with the utility's own reporting; a household on a well needs a lab accredited for the relevant method, which is not part of a standard well panel and has to be ordered specifically. Questions people ask about pfas filter system
Does a water softener remove PFAS?
No. A softener exchanges hardness minerals for sodium or potassium and is not designed for these compounds. If you have both problems you need both a softener and a dedicated PFAS stage.
Do pitcher filters help?
Some pitcher and faucet-mount filters are certified for reduction of specific PFAS compounds, but capacity is small and the cartridge has to be changed on schedule. Check what the certification actually names rather than assuming carbon is carbon.
Should a well owner test for PFAS?
It is worth doing where there is a plausible source nearby, such as a firefighting training area, an airport, a landfill or industrial land. Otherwise the standard well panel plus local knowledge is the usual starting point.
Does boiling water remove PFAS?
No. Boiling drives off water and leaves these compounds behind, so it concentrates them rather than reducing them. Treatment has to physically remove or adsorb them.
