Only three treatment technologies have a serious record against PFAS in a household: reverse osmosis, granular activated carbon, and anion exchange resin. A water filter for PFAS therefore means one of those three, sized and certified for the job, not a general purpose pitcher. Which one suits you depends on whether you need treated water at one tap or throughout the house.

What the federal rule actually sets

The EPA's 2024 drinking water rule set maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 parts per trillion for PFHxS, PFNA and GenX chemicals. Proposals published in May 2026 keep the PFOA and PFOS limits with a compliance option extended to 2031, and propose rescinding the others. Those numbers apply to public water systems, not to your house, but they are the yardstick a laboratory result will be read against. If you are on a private well, no federal limit applies to your supply at all and testing is entirely your own decision.

Reverse osmosis at the point of use

A reverse osmosis membrane rejects PFAS well and is the most thorough option available to a household. It is a point-of-use technology in practice: an under-sink system treats the kitchen tap and whatever you plumb off it, which covers drinking, cooking and ice. Whole-house reverse osmosis exists but is a much larger commitment involving storage, repressurization and a substantial reject stream. The important detail is that an RO system is a chain, and the membrane does the PFAS work, so the prefilters must be maintained on schedule or the membrane fouls and the performance you paid for quietly degrades.

Carbon and ion exchange

Granular activated carbon adsorbs PFAS, and it is the technology most often used at whole-house scale because it can be deployed as a large media tank treating everything entering the building. Its weakness is that the bed has a finite capacity and there is no visible warning when it approaches exhaustion, so replacement is driven by volume and by testing rather than by taste or pressure. Anion exchange resin works differently, holding the PFAS by charge, and generally has higher capacity per volume of media. Both are only as good as the contact time the vessel provides, which is why undersized cartridges perform far worse than a properly sized bed.

Certification is the only proof worth having

PFAS reduction claims cannot be verified in your kitchen, so independent certification against the recognized standard for PFOA and PFOS reduction is the only meaningful evidence a product works. Look up the specific model in the certifier's own listing rather than trusting a logo on the packaging, because certification attaches to a model and a cartridge, not to a brand. Then treat the cartridge interval as a hard limit rather than a suggestion. If you have a laboratory result showing PFAS in your supply, retest after the system is installed and running: that post-install test is the only thing that confirms your particular installation is doing the job.

Does a standard pitcher filter remove PFAS?

Not unless that specific model is certified for PFOA and PFOS reduction. Ordinary taste-and-odor carbon in a pitcher is not designed for it and should not be assumed to work.
