What home kits do well
Home testing is at its best when the thing you are measuring is present in quantities a color change can show, and when what you need is a decision rather than a precise figure. Hardness, free and total chlorine, pH, alkalinity, iron, copper and nitrate all fit. So does dissolved solids with a handheld meter, which is a useful before and after check on a reverse osmosis unit. These tests are fast, repeatable, and cheap enough to run monthly, which makes them the right tool for monitoring equipment you already own. A softener that has stopped softening, a carbon filter that has stopped removing chlorine, and a membrane that is failing all announce themselves in a home test long before anyone notices at a tap.
What has to go to a lab
Bacteria testing needs a sterile bottle, a clean sampling technique and incubation, and the result is a presence or absence that no strip can give you honestly. Lead, arsenic and PFAS all matter at concentrations far below the resolution of a home pad, so a home result of none is not evidence of none. Anything you plan to spend real money on should be confirmed by a lab as well, because a laboratory report is the document a contractor sizes from and the record you keep. Certified labs supply their own bottles with preservatives for particular analytes, and using the wrong container invalidates the result before it starts.
Sampling, which decides whether any of it means anything
Take cold water. Run the tap for thirty seconds to a minute when you want to know what is in the main; take a first-draw sample with no flushing when you want to know what your own plumbing is adding, which is the correct approach for lead and copper. Remove a caked aerator before sampling and do not sanitize the tap with bleach immediately before a bacteria sample. Fill to the line, cap immediately, keep it cool and get it to the lab inside its holding time; a sample that sits in a hot car over a weekend measures the car. Label every bottle with the tap, date and time, because two unlabeled bottles are one useless bottle.
Who is responsible for testing your water
