What is automated
The dose, tied to actual flow rather than to a clock. The pump is wired to the well pump or triggered by a flow switch, so solution goes in only while water is moving, which is what keeps the concentration roughly constant across very different demands. Better controllers vary the rate with flow rather than dosing a fixed stroke, and some monitor the solution level and alarm before the tank runs dry, which is a worthwhile feature on a system nobody looks at.
What is not
Contact time, which is a physical tank sized to give the reaction time to complete at peak flow, and which is the component most often left out and the reason many installations achieve nothing. The filter after it that catches whatever the chlorine oxidized, since dissolved iron converted to particles must be captured or it deposits further along. The activated carbon after that, removing residual chlorine and taste. And the solution itself, which somebody makes up.
The drift nobody automates
Hypochlorite solution loses strength in storage, faster in warmth and light, so the delivered dose falls over the life of a tank even though the pump setting has not changed. Test the residual at an outlet after every refill rather than setting the pump once. The injection check valve scales and blocks, which is the most common failure on these systems and presents as a pump running normally with nothing being delivered, so it needs checking rather than assuming.
Whether you need it at all
Fix the wellhead first: casing above grade, ground sloping away, an intact vermin proof cap and sanitary seal, no surface water reaching the annulus. Shock chlorinate and retest twice. The EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody else will find an entry route for you.
