Well water chlorinator: continuous treatment for a private well

A well water chlorinator is a small chemical feed pump that injects a measured dose of chlorine into the line as the pump runs, so every gallon entering the house is treated. It is used for two jobs at once: killing bacteria continuously, and oxidizing dissolved iron, manganese and sulfur so a filter downstream can catch them. It is not the same thing as shock chlorinating a well.

The three parts that make it work

A chlorinator is never a single device. A metering pump, wired to run whenever the well pump runs, injects sodium hypochlorite through a fitting in the line. A retention tank then holds the water long enough for the chlorine to do its work, because disinfection and oxidation both need contact time rather than a squirt and a shrug. Finally a backwashing carbon or media filter removes the spent chlorine and the solids it created, so the water reaching the house is neither chlorinated nor cloudy. Leave out the retention tank and you get chlorine taste with half the benefit.

Why oxidation is often the real reason

Iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards, with Penn State Extension giving recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Both usually arrive dissolved and invisible, then oxidize on contact with air to produce the orange and black staining in fixtures and laundry. A chlorinator does that oxidation deliberately and on your terms, in the retention tank, where a filter can then remove the particles. That is why the same equipment gets recommended for a rotten egg smell, since hydrogen sulfide oxidizes the same way.

Continuous chlorination against shock chlorination

Shock chlorination is a one-time dose poured into the well casing to disinfect the well itself, normally after work on the well, flooding or a positive bacteria test. It is a cleanup, and if bacteria return afterward it has told you the contamination is ongoing. Continuous chlorination is the standing answer to that ongoing case: it treats the water rather than the well, every time the pump runs. Ultraviolet is the alternative where bacteria are the only problem, but ultraviolet does nothing for iron, manganese or sulfur, so a well with staining as well as bacteria usually ends up chlorinated.

Living with one

The solution tank needs refilling, the injection point needs occasional cleaning where mineral builds around it, and the dose needs checking against a residual test after the retention tank, since too little fails to disinfect and too much overloads the carbon filter. Get the well tested before and after installation so you know the system is doing what you bought it for. Does a well water chlorinator leave chlorine in the drinking water?

It should not. A properly built system puts a backwashing carbon filter after the retention tank, which removes the residual chlorine along with the particles the chlorine created.

Do I need a retention tank?
