A water well chlorinator is a small metering pump (or a pellet dropper at the wellhead) that feeds a steady, low dose of chlorine into the line every time the well pump runs. It is not a one-off shock treatment: it is permanent equipment that keeps bacteria knocked down and oxidizes iron and sulfur so a filter can catch them.
What the equipment is, part by part
The usual setup is a diaphragm metering pump sitting beside a solution tank of diluted sodium hypochlorite. The pump is wired to the well pump pressure switch, or triggered by a flow switch or pulse meter, so it only doses while water is moving. Chlorine enters the pipe through an injection quill fitted with a check valve, which keeps pressurized water from pushing back into the solution tank. Pellet droppers work differently: they sit on the well cap and drop calcium hypochlorite tablets down the casing, which is simpler but gives you far less control over dose.
Contact time is the part people skip
Chlorine does not work instantly. It needs minutes in contact with the water before that water reaches a tap, and a pressure tank does not provide that reliably because water can short-circuit straight through it. That is why a proper installation includes a retention tank sized to the household flow, usually a tall plastic vessel plumbed between the injection point and the rest of the system. Undersize the retention and you get chlorine taste at the tap with bacteria still surviving, which is the worst of both outcomes.
What has to come after the chlorinator
Chlorination leaves two things behind: a chlorine residual you do not want to drink or shower in, and the solids it created by oxidizing dissolved iron, manganese and sulfide into particles. Both are handled downstream, normally by a backwashing carbon tank that strips the residual and traps the precipitate, sometimes with a sediment filter ahead of it when iron is heavy. Plan that filter into the budget from the start. A chlorinator installed on its own turns clear water cloudy and orange, and homeowners often blame the injector when the missing piece is the filter.
When a chlorinator is the wrong answer
If a coliform hit came from a cracked casing, a flooded well pit, a bad sanitary seal or surface water tracking down the annulus, injection is treating a symptom while the entry point stays open. Fix the well first, then retest. If the only problem is bacteria in otherwise clean, clear water with no iron or sulfur, ultraviolet disinfection does the same job without chemicals, taste or a retention tank. Chlorination earns its place when you need oxidation as well as disinfection, or when the water is too colored or turbid for UV to work.

Does a chlorinator replace shock chlorination?
No. Shock chlorination is a one-time disinfection of the well, casing and plumbing. A chlorinator treats water continuously as it is drawn, and it is the right tool when contamination keeps returning after shocking.
Do I really need a retention tank?
For disinfection, yes in nearly every case. Chlorine needs sustained contact with the water before use, and a pressure tank cannot guarantee it. Some iron-oxidation setups get by with a static mixer and a long run of pipe, but bacteria control should not.
Will my water taste like a swimming pool?
It should not. The carbon filter downstream removes the residual chlorine before the water reaches your taps. If you taste chlorine, the dose is too high, the carbon bed is exhausted, or the filter was never installed.
How often do I refill the solution tank?
It depends on your dose setting and how much water the house uses, so check the level on a fixed day each week until you know your own pattern. Running the tank dry means the system is dosing air, not chlorine.
