If the supply cannot provide it, the bed never fluidizes: dirt stays in place, the media gradually packs, and the filter continues running its cycles while filtering very little. This is the single most common design failure, particularly on wells with modest pumps. Set frequency from the actual sediment load rather than a factory default. Too rare and the bed compacts and channels; too often and water goes down the drain for nothing. A reasonable approach is to start conservative, then extend the interval while watching the pressure drop across the vessel between cycles. Duration has to be long enough to lift the bed and carry the released material out, typically several minutes, followed by a rinse step that settles the bed back into its graded order before service resumes.
Timer or meter, and when the cycle runs
A timer valve backwashes on a clock, which is simple and suits a steady household. A metered valve counts water used and backwashes on volume, which suits a household whose use varies, a holiday home, or anywhere the load tracks consumption rather than time. Either way, schedule the cycle for the middle of the night: the filter is out of service while it runs, so a household drawing water mid cycle interrupts the backwash and receives unfiltered water at the same time.
Commissioning and the periodic check
After installation, run a manual backwash and watch the drain. It should run visibly dirty and then progressively clear, which is the evidence the bed is being cleaned. Time how long that takes and set duration accordingly. Repeat that manual check every few months, because it is the only routine test that proves the system is doing something.
