How a sediment backwash filter compares with cartridges

A backwashing sediment filter is a tank of graded media that traps particles as water flows down through it, then periodically reverses the flow to lift the bed and wash the accumulated material out to drain. Nothing is bought and thrown away. That is the whole difference from a cartridge system, and it decides where each one belongs.

How the backwash cycle works

A control head on top of the tank runs the cycle, either on a timer or on a meter counting volume. Backwash reverses the flow upwards fast enough to lift and fluidize the bed, releasing trapped sediment and carrying it to drain. A rinse settles and reclassifies the media so the graded layers reform correctly, then the unit returns to service. The bed cleans itself, so capacity is restored rather than consumed, which is why these run for years with only occasional media attention.

Where it beats cartridges

On dirty water, decisively. A supply carrying real sediment consumes cartridges fast enough that the changes become both an expense and a chore, and every change means shutting off, opening a housing and handling a wet filthy element. A media tank absorbs the same load continuously with no consumable and no interruption. It also holds a far larger volume of media than any cartridge, so pressure drop stays low and it does not blind. On a well producing silt, this is usually the right architecture.

What it demands in return

Three things cartridges do not need. A drain that will take the backwash flow, which is substantial and arrives quickly. Enough flow available to fluidize the bed, which on a low yield well can exceed what the borehole produces and is a genuine design constraint rather than a detail. And space and headroom for a tall tank. It also costs more to buy, and it uses water on every cycle, which is a consideration where water is metered or the well is marginal.

Choosing the media and the sequence

Graded sand and gravel is the traditional bed. Zeolite filters finer than sand at lower weight. Multi media beds layer different densities to catch a wider size range. Whichever is used, this stage goes first in the train, ahead of the softener, any membrane and the UV, and on a well making coarse sand a centrifugal separator goes ahead of even this.
