A cartridge water filter is the familiar pairing of a housing plumbed into the line and a replaceable insert inside it. The housing is permanent and the cartridge is the consumable, which is what separates it from a sealed inline unit. Getting one right is three decisions: what media, what size housing, and how often you are honestly going to change it.
The media decides what it does
The housing is neutral. A spun or pleated sediment cartridge catches particles by size and is judged by its micron rating, with a looser rating passing more and clogging slower. A carbon block adsorbs chlorine, taste, odor and organic compounds while also filtering particles. Specialty cartridges exist for iron reduction, scale control and specific contaminants. Which one you need comes from what the supply carries, and on city water that is written down for you already: every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and the EPA maintains a finder for it. Pleated sediment cartridges can often be rinsed and reused a few times where the load is grit, whereas carbon is spent when its surface is full and cannot be revived by washing.
Size the housing to flow, not to price
A standard slim housing suits a single fixture or a low flow line. A large diameter housing holds far more media, which buys both longer life and a lower pressure drop at household flow, and it is the sensible choice at the point of entry. The mistake to avoid is putting a small housing on a whole house line: it will restrict flow when several fixtures run, and it will clog fast enough that the cartridge cost outweighs the housing saving within a year. Read the rated flow and pressure drop together on any spec sheet.
Staging cartridges in the right order
Where two or more housings run in series, sediment always goes first. A carbon cartridge asked to strain out grit blinds off on its surface long before its adsorptive capacity is used, so you pay for carbon and throw it away as a sediment filter. On a supply with visible dirt, some installers put a coarse sediment cartridge ahead of a finer one, so the cheap one takes the load and the fine one lasts. A pressure gauge either side of the bank tells you when the restriction has grown enough to justify a change.
Changing one without a flood
Shut the inlet, open a downstream tap to release pressure, and press the housing's relief button if it has one. Put a bucket underneath, because a large housing holds more water than people expect. When it comes apart, clean the O-ring, lubricate it with a food-safe silicone grease and seat it fully in its groove, since a dry or twisted O-ring is behind nearly every housing leak. How often should a cartridge water filter be changed?
Follow the manufacturer's rated capacity, and shorten it if your water is dirty. Sediment cartridges are judged on pressure drop, carbon on its rated gallons rather than on taste.
Can I wash and reuse a cartridge?
Pleated sediment cartridges can often be rinsed a few times. Carbon and specialty media cannot be regenerated by washing, and reusing one gives no protection at all.
Why did my housing start leaking after a change?
Almost always the O-ring. It needs to be clean, lightly greased, undamaged and fully seated in its groove before the sump is tightened back onto the cap.
Which comes first, sediment or carbon?
Sediment first, every time. Otherwise the carbon cartridge blocks up straining particles and is thrown away long before its adsorptive capacity has been used.
