A flushed sample is taken after running the tap long enough to clear the household plumbing and draw water from the service line or main, and it points to where the lead is coming from. High first draw and low flushed suggests the fixture or interior plumbing; high in both suggests the service line.
Choosing a lab and following its instructions
Use a laboratory accredited for drinking water analysis, which your state or local health department can identify, and follow the instructions in its kit rather than a general procedure you read elsewhere. The bottle may contain preservative that must not be rinsed out. The label wants the collection date and time. The lab may specify the stagnation period, the volume, or whether to remove the aerator, and small deviations change results enough to matter. Hold the sample as instructed and return it promptly rather than leaving it in a hot car over a weekend.
Acting on a positive result
Order the responses by cost and speed. Flush standing water before drinking or cooking, which helps immediately at no cost. Fit a point of use filter certified for lead reduction at the kitchen tap, which reliably covers drinking and cooking water. Use cold water for anything you will consume, since hot water dissolves lead more readily. Replace brass fixtures that contribute. Contact your utility about the service line, since replacement often involves shared ownership between the utility and the property, and many utilities run inventory and replacement programs.
Where else to look for information
A community water system publishes a Consumer Confidence Report every year and the EPA maintains a finder to locate yours, which tells you about the treated water leaving the plant and about system-wide monitoring.
