A water lead test measures lead that has dissolved into your water from the pipes, solder and brass fittings between the main and your faucet. Because lead almost always comes from your own plumbing rather than the source, how you collect the sample decides what the result means. A rushed sample from a running tap can miss the problem entirely.
First draw, flushed, and why both exist
A first draw sample is taken after the water has sat still in the pipes for several hours, typically overnight, with nothing drawn from any tap in the house. That stagnant water has had the longest contact with the plumbing and shows the worst case. A flushed sample is taken after running the tap for a set period and shows what you get in normal use. Labs that are hunting for a lead source often ask for both, plus sequential samples, so they can tell whether the metal is coming from the fixture, the interior pipework or the service line.
Kits versus a certified laboratory
Dip strips and color-change kits sold for home use are screening tools at best; they are not sensitive at the levels that matter and a clean strip proves very little. A mail-in kit from a certified drinking water laboratory is a different product: you receive prepared bottles, collect to written instructions, ship the sample back and get a report with a detection limit and a method reference on it. If the result will inform a plumbing decision or a conversation with a landlord or utility, use the laboratory.
What to do before you collect
Do not remove or clean the aerator immediately before sampling, because that can strip away particulate lead the test is meant to catch. Do not use a filtered faucet or a fridge dispenser as the sample point unless you are specifically testing the filter. Choose the tap the household actually drinks from, usually the kitchen cold. Note the time the water sat, the tap used and whether any treatment sits upstream, then send that context with the sample so the lab can interpret it.
When the result is higher than you hoped
Start by flushing before drinking and cooking, and by using cold water only, since hot water dissolves lead more readily. Then work out the source: a service line inventory from your utility, a look at the pipe where it enters the building, and a check for older solder joints and brass valves. A point of use filter certified for lead reduction at the kitchen tap is the fastest interim barrier, and replacing the offending fitting or line is the permanent fix.
City supplies and private wells behave differently
If you are on a community water system, your utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and the EPA maintains a finder for it, so you can see what has been detected system-wide before you test your own tap. Private wells sit outside that entirely: they are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no one tests them unless the owner arranges it. How long should water sit before a first draw sample?
Most laboratory protocols ask for at least six hours of no water use anywhere in the house, which usually means collecting first thing in the morning.
Can I test for lead with a home strip kit?
Strips are only a rough screen and can miss meaningful lead. A certified laboratory test is the only result worth acting on or showing to anyone else.
Does boiling water remove lead?
No, and it makes matters slightly worse, because boiling evaporates water and concentrates whatever lead is dissolved in what remains.
Should I test if my home was built recently?
It is still worth one test. Brass fittings and older solder can appear in newer construction, and the service line to the street may predate the house.
