Using a lead water test kit properly

A lead water test kit answers a question about your plumbing, not about your water source. Lead is almost never in the water leaving the treatment plant; it is picked up on the way to your tap from a lead service line, from solder at the joints, or from brass fixtures. That is why when you take the sample matters as much as which kit you use.

Where the lead comes from

Three sources account for nearly all household lead. The service line running from the main to the house, in older properties. Lead solder used at copper joints in homes plumbed before it was prohibited. And brass fittings, valves and faucet bodies, which were legally allowed to contain a small proportion of lead for many years. Because all three sit between the utility and your glass, the water can be entirely compliant when it enters the property and still carry lead at the kitchen tap. Utilities inventory service lines, and yours can usually tell you what is on your street.

Why sample timing decides the result

Lead dissolves into water that sits still against the metal, so the concentration depends on how long the water has been stagnant. A first draw sample, taken after the water has stood overnight or for several hours, shows the worst case at that fixture. A flushed sample, taken after running the tap, shows what you get in normal use. Sample the tap you actually drink from, do not clean or remove the aerator beforehand if you are testing what you drink, and follow the kit instructions exactly, because the protocol is what makes results comparable.

Instant strips versus a mail in lab kit

Instant kits give a color change in minutes and are useful only as a coarse screen, because lead matters at concentrations well below what a color pad resolves reliably. A mail in kit, where you fill a supplied bottle and post it to a certified lab, gives a numeric result with a stated detection limit and is what you should use before making a decision or spending money. Many utilities and health departments run free or subsidised lead sampling programs, and those are worth asking about before buying anything at all.

What to do with the result

If lead is detected, ask the utility about your service line inventory and read your Consumer Confidence Report: every community water system publishes one annually and the EPA maintains a finder. In the meantime, use cold water for drinking and cooking and let a stagnant tap run before use, and fit a filter certified for lead reduction at the point of use rather than trusting a general carbon cartridge. Private wells are outside all of this, since the EPA notes they are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and no utility inventory covers them.
