Running a copper water test and reading the result

Copper in tap water almost always comes from the household plumbing rather than from the supply, dissolved out of copper pipe and brass fittings by water that is corrosive to them. That single fact shapes the whole test: the result depends on how long the water sat in the pipe before you collected it, so a sample drawn carelessly can miss the problem completely.

Signs worth testing for

Three are common. Blue green staining in basins, baths and around fittings is the classic sign, caused by dissolved copper depositing as the water evaporates. A metallic or bitter taste, particularly first thing in the morning, is another. And pinhole leaks in copper pipework suggest the water is actively attacking the metal. Any of those justify a test. So does new plumbing, since freshly installed copper releases more until a protective film establishes, and so does a private well with acidic water, which is corrosive by nature.

Draw the sample the way the laboratory asks

A first draw sample, taken from a tap that has not been used for several hours, captures the water that has been standing in contact with the pipe and is what people actually drink in the morning. That is normally the sample that matters. A flushed sample, taken after running the tap, shows what is arriving from the supply, and comparing the two separates a plumbing problem from a source problem cleanly. Use the bottles the laboratory provides, follow their stagnation time exactly, and take the sample from the cold tap.

What the result points at

Copper high in the first draw and low after flushing means the household plumbing is the source, and the underlying cause is usually corrosive water: low pH, low alkalinity, or high dissolved carbon dioxide. Copper present in both samples suggests something upstream, which is unusual on a municipal system. Because a community supply is monitored for it, the EPA notes that every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report with a finder maintained for them, and that report tells you what the utility has measured before you sample anything.

What to do about a high result

The immediate step is behavioural and costs nothing: run the tap until the water is noticeably colder before using it for drinking or cooking, and never use hot water for either, since hot water dissolves metals more readily. The durable fix is to stop the water attacking the pipe, which usually means raising pH and alkalinity with a neutralizing filter or a dosing system on a private well.
