Filtered water is ordinary supply water that has been passed through a material chosen to hold back particular contaminants: sediment caught in a pleated element, chlorine and taste compounds held on activated carbon, dissolved salts rejected by a membrane. The term describes a process, not a grade of purity, so the honest question is always which filter, aimed at which problem.
The word describes a process, not a standard
Nothing on a package legally makes water into filtered water beyond the fact that it went through a filter. A pitcher with a small carbon cartridge and a whole-house tank holding cubic feet of media both produce filtered water, and they do wildly different jobs. That is why a shopper should never buy on the phrase. Ask instead what the element is made of, what it is certified to reduce, and how long it holds that performance before the media is exhausted and the water passing through it is barely changed at all.
What filtration actually removes
Mechanical filters work by size: a sediment cartridge strains out sand, silt, rust flakes and pipe scale, and that is the whole of its job. Activated carbon works by adsorption, holding organic molecules, chlorine and the compounds behind musty or chemical tastes onto an enormous internal surface. Specialty media target one chemistry each, such as iron oxidation or lead capture. Reverse osmosis is a different mechanism again, pushing water through a semi permeable membrane so most dissolved solids stay behind. No single element does all four.
What filtered water is not
Filtered water is not automatically sterile. Standard carbon and sediment elements pass bacteria and viruses freely, and a saturated carbon block sitting warm under a sink can host growth of its own. Filtering also does nothing for hardness unless the system contains ion exchange resin or a scale conditioning stage, so a household with white crust on the kettle and film on the shower glass will still have it. Deciding what your household needs filtered
Start from the complaint. Chlorine smell at the kitchen tap points to carbon at a single point of use. Grit in the aerators points to sediment filtration where the line enters the house. Stains, odors from a well, or a contaminant named in a lab report point to a targeted media chosen after testing. If you are on a community system, the utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report listing what it monitors and finds, and the EPA maintains a finder for locating yours. Read that first, then buy the filter that answers it.
Questions people ask about what is filtered water
Is filtered water the same as purified water?
No. Filtration describes any pass through a medium, while purified is a stricter description implying most dissolved matter has been removed, usually by distillation or reverse osmosis.
Does filtered water still contain minerals?
Sediment and carbon filters leave dissolved calcium, magnesium and other minerals in place. Only membrane systems and distillation take most of them out.
Is filtered water safe to drink if my supply is under a boil notice?
Not unless the device is rated for microbiological purification. Ordinary carbon and sediment filters pass bacteria, so follow the boil notice exactly as issued.
How do I know when a filter has stopped filtering?
