Water that has passed an ultraviolet chamber looks, tastes and measures exactly the same as the water that went in. Nothing has been removed and nothing added. That is unusual among treatment stages and it has three practical consequences worth understanding, particularly for anyone expecting the change they would get from a filter.
Chemically unchanged, which cuts both ways
Hardness, iron, manganese, nitrate, arsenic, chlorine, taste and colour all leave the chamber exactly as they arrived. If the water was hard before, it is hard after, and the kettle will fur at the same rate. If it tasted of chlorine, it still does. The benefit is entirely microbiological: bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts have been damaged so they cannot reproduce. Households that expected a taste improvement, and there are many, were sold on the word filter rather than on what the equipment does.
No residual, so downstream matters
Chemical disinfection leaves a residual that keeps working through the pipes. Ultraviolet does not, so the protection ends at the chamber outlet. Anything that enters the plumbing after that point, through a cross connection, a repair, or growth in a length of pipe that sees little use, is untreated. That is why the lamp is placed as close as practical to where water branches into the house, and why a storage tank downstream of a lamp is a design that needs thinking about rather than an obvious improvement.
Storing it
Water drawn from a UV treated supply into a jug or bottle has no disinfectant residual protecting it, so treat it as you would boiled water: clean covered containers, refrigerated, used within a day or two rather than left standing in a warm kitchen. The same applies to a system that has stood unused, where water sitting in pipework downstream of the lamp has been out of contact with treatment for the whole period. Draw and discard before use after a holiday.
Proving it worked
Because nothing about the water changes, there is no sensory evidence the system is working and no evidence it has stopped. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody samples on your behalf; a test after commissioning and periodically afterwards is the only confirmation available.
