Home filtered water systems: what they are and how to pick the right one

Home filtered water systems come in two basic scales: point-of-entry systems that treat every drop entering the house, and point-of-use units that treat one tap, usually in the kitchen. Which scale you need depends entirely on what is in your water and where it causes trouble. A chlorine taste at the kitchen sink is a one-tap problem; sediment wrecking every fixture is a whole-house problem. Sort that out first and the shopping gets much simpler.

Point of entry or point of use

A point-of-entry system sits on the main line where water enters the house, so showers, laundry, toilets and every faucet get the same treated water. It makes sense when the problem touches skin, appliances or plumbing: sediment, chlorine odor in the shower, iron staining. A point-of-use unit, such as an under-sink filter or a reverse osmosis system, treats only the water you drink and cook with. It makes sense when the concern is taste or a contaminant you only care about ingesting. Many homes end up with both: a broad whole-house stage plus a fine polishing filter at the kitchen tap.

Start with what is actually in the water

Buying filtration before knowing the water is how people end up with the wrong media. If you are on a city supply, read your utility's annual water quality report first: the EPA requires every community water system to publish a Consumer Confidence Report each year and maintains a finder for locating yours. The common system types and what each one fixes

Sediment filters catch sand, rust flakes and grit that clog aerators and abrade valves. Activated carbon removes chlorine, chloramine with the catalytic variety, and many taste and odor compounds. Reverse osmosis strips dissolved solids at a single tap and is the usual answer for the widest range of drinking-water concerns. Specialty media handle iron, sulfur odor or acidic water, mostly on wells. None of these soften water: hardness is a dissolved mineral problem that takes an ion exchange softener, which is a separate purchase with its own sizing rules.

Filtering and softening are different jobs

A filter physically or chemically captures contaminants; a softener swaps dissolved calcium and magnesium for sodium on a resin bed. Scale on fixtures, stiff laundry and spotted glassware are softener problems, and no cartridge filter will touch them. Plenty of households need both, plumbed in sequence at the point of entry. Do home filtered water systems remove hardness?

Is a whole-house system better than an under-sink filter?
