The difference between filtered water and distilled water is what each one leaves in the glass. A filter is selective: it captures some things and lets the rest pass, minerals included. A distiller is indiscriminate: it takes the water away from everything else, so what condenses is close to pure and close to empty.
A filter is a selective net
Activated carbon adsorbs chlorine, many organic chemicals and the compounds that carry musty or chemical tastes. Specialist media add lead or fluoride reduction. Sediment cartridges catch particles. What none of them do is remove dissolved minerals across the board, so filtered water still carries calcium and magnesium and still tastes like water from your area. That selectivity is the appeal and also the limit: a filter only removes what its media are designed for.
A distiller is a phase change
A distiller boils water and condenses the steam in a separate chamber. Minerals, metals, nitrate and most other dissolved solids cannot make the trip as vapor and stay behind as scale in the boiler. Volatile organic compounds are the exception, which is why a good distiller carries a small carbon vent filter. The result is very low in dissolved solids and noticeably flat to drink.
What each one misses
A filter misses whatever its media do not target. A carbon pitcher will not remove nitrate, will not remove hardness, and will not sterilize a contaminated well. A distiller misses almost nothing chemically, but it misses the practical questions: it makes water slowly, in batches, and needs descaling. The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, at soft up to 60 mg/L, moderately hard 61 to 120, hard 121 to 180 and very hard above that. Distilling drops that to near zero; filtering leaves your band exactly where it was.
Choosing by the job in front of you
For everyday drinking and cooking on a decent municipal supply, a filter is the sensible default: less effort, no waiting, and water that still tastes of something. For a steam iron, a humidifier, a car battery or lab-style rinsing where mineral deposits are the enemy, distilled is the right answer and filtered water will still leave scale. For a household with a specific contaminant named on a report, buy against that contaminant rather than against the category.
