Anion exchange resin and what it removes at home

Anion exchange resin is the mirror image of the resin in your water softener. Softener resin holds positively charged ions and trades them for sodium; anion resin holds negatively charged ions and trades them for chloride. That one difference makes it the media of choice for tannins, nitrate, sulfate and some forms of arsenic and uranium, none of which a softener touches.

Cation and anion resin, side by side

A standard softener is packed with strong acid cation resin. Calcium and magnesium carry a positive charge, the resin holds them and releases sodium in exchange, and brine reverses the process during regeneration. Anion resin is manufactured with the opposite charge on its functional groups, so it grabs negatively charged ions: nitrate, sulfate, bicarbonate, the organic acids that make tannin colored water, and the oxyanion forms of arsenic and uranium. Both are small beads in a pressure tank served by a control valve, and from the outside the two installations look identical.

What households actually fit it for

Three problems account for most residential anion installations. Tannins, which turn well water the color of weak tea and are not removed by carbon or sediment filtration. Nitrate, which is common where a shallow well sits near agriculture or a septic field, and which cannot be seen, tasted or smelled. Sulfate, which is a taste and laxative concern in some regions. Arsenic and uranium treatment uses specialized resins selected for those species and needs a lab result identifying the form present before anyone selects media.

The dumping problem you have to design around

Anion resin has preferences. It holds sulfate more tightly than nitrate, so on a bed approaching exhaustion incoming sulfate can displace nitrate that is already captured and push a slug of concentrated nitrate into the house. That is worse than no treatment at all, and it is the reason nitrate systems are regenerated well before capacity is used, use nitrate selective resin where sulfate is high, and are monitored rather than left alone. Regeneration, fouling and replacement

Anion resin regenerates on sodium chloride brine in most home systems, so the tank looks and behaves like a softener and needs the same salt supply. The resin itself has a working life and then loses capacity, and it can be fouled early by iron, by organic matter, and by chlorine from a municipal supply, which is why a carbon stage is fitted upstream when the feed is chlorinated. Is anion exchange resin the same as softener resin?

Will an anion resin tank remove hardness?
