The resin tank, also called the mineral tank, is the tall vessel that does the actual softening. Inside it sits a bed of ion exchange beads that hold sodium and swap it for the calcium and magnesium in the water passing through. The brine tank beside it holds the salt that recharges those beads. Everything a softener does well or badly happens inside this tank.
What is inside and how it works
The vessel is a fiberglass wound pressure tank with a plastic liner, filled with sulfonated polystyrene beads and fitted with a riser tube down the center ending in a slotted distributor. In service, water flows down through the bed, hardness sticks to the beads and softened water leaves through the riser. In regeneration the flow reverses: the bed is backwashed to loosen and rinse it, brine is drawn through to strip the accumulated hardness off the beads and restore sodium, and the tank is rinsed before returning to service. Nothing about that cycle is optional.
What destroys a resin bed
Chlorine oxidizes the bead structure over years on municipal supplies, which is why carbon ahead of a softener extends its life significantly. Iron is the faster killer. Penn State Extension notes that softeners can remove dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness is between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, but that oxidized iron fouls resin, and once the beads are coated they exchange progressively less no matter how much salt is used. Sediment abrades and channels the bed, and a bed left unregenerated for months compacts and sours.
Telling a fouled bed from a broken valve
Hard water at the tap does not mean the resin is finished. Check the obvious first: salt bridged into a crust in the brine tank, an injector blocked so brine is never drawn, a drain line kinked, a bypass left open after service, or a control head that has lost its schedule. A resin cleaner formulated for iron will recover a lightly fouled bed and is worth trying before anything is bought. Replace the resin or the tank
Good resin lasts many years on clean municipal water and a fraction of that on iron bearing well water. Replacing just the media is much cheaper than a new softener and involves emptying the vessel, inspecting the riser and distributor, and refilling with the correct volume and grade, with fine mesh resin where iron is present. Replace the tank itself where the liner has cracked, the fiberglass is delaminating, or the riser or distributor has broken, because a broken distributor sends beads into the house plumbing and no amount of new media fixes that.
