Mineral tanks are the tall cylinders that hold the working media in a softener or a backwashing filter. The tank does no treatment itself: it is a pressure vessel that keeps a bed of resin or filter media in the water path and lets the control valve on top wash and reset that bed. Almost every whole-house treatment system that is not a cartridge housing is built around one.
What is inside the tank
A typical mineral tank is fiberglass wound over a plastic liner, threaded at the top for the control valve. Down the center runs a riser tube ending in a distributor basket or screen at the bottom, sometimes bedded in a layer of gravel that supports the media and spreads flow. The media sits on top of that, filling roughly two thirds of the tank. The empty space above, the freeboard, is not wasted volume: it is where the bed lifts and tumbles during backwash so trapped dirt can wash free and the grains can resettle in the right order.
Mineral tank against brine tank
A salt-based softener has two tanks and people mix them up constantly. The mineral tank is the narrow one with the valve on top, holding resin, and the water actually flows through it. The brine tank is the shorter, wider bin you pour salt into, and no service water passes through it: it only makes the concentrated brine that the valve draws in during regeneration to strip hardness off the resin. Salt goes in the brine tank, never the mineral tank. Pouring salt into a mineral tank ruins the bed and the valve behind it.
The media a tank can hold
The same vessel serves many jobs depending on what fills it. Cation exchange resin makes it a softener. Catalytic or granular activated carbon makes it a whole-house chlorine and taste filter. Oxidizing media makes it an iron and sulfur filter. Calcite or a magnesia blend makes it an acid neutralizer for corrosive low-pH water. Filter sand, garnet and anthracite in layers make it a multimedia sediment filter. This is why two systems that look identical from the outside can do completely different things, and why the valve programming has to match the media inside.
How mineral tanks fail, and repacking
The tank itself rarely fails; the bed and the internals do. Channeling, where water cuts a preferred path through a fouled or compacted bed, means treated water leaves partly untreated while the tank looks fine. A cracked riser or a broken distributor sends media into the house and grit into every aerator. Resin degrades with chlorine exposure and gets fouled by iron: Penn State Extension notes that softeners can remove dissolved iron only within limits, roughly pH above 6.7, hardness of 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L, and that oxidized iron fouls resin. A tank whose media is spent can usually be emptied and repacked with fresh media, which is cheaper and greener than replacing the whole system, provided the valve and the tank shell are sound.
Questions people ask about mineral tanks
Do I put salt in the mineral tank?
Never. Salt goes only in the brine tank. The mineral tank holds resin or filter media, and salt dumped into it damages the bed and can wreck the control valve.
How long does the media in a mineral tank last?
Softener resin often runs many years on clean water but degrades fast with chlorine or iron. Carbon and oxidizing media follow the maker's stated capacity and are replaced sooner.
Why is media ending up in my faucet aerators?
Usually a cracked riser tube or a broken bottom distributor letting the bed escape into the plumbing. The tank must be opened, the internals replaced and the media repacked.
Can I reuse an old mineral tank with new media?
Often yes. If the shell holds pressure without bulging or weeping and the threads are sound, repacking with fresh media and sound internals restores the system.
