NSF 42 vs 53 on a filter box, and which one your problem needs

NSF 42 and NSF 53 are two different American National Standards for drinking water treatment units, and the difference is the point of the whole exercise. Standard 42 covers aesthetic effects such as taste, odor, chlorine and particulate. Standard 53 covers health related contaminants such as lead, cysts and volatile organic compounds.

What each standard actually covers

Certification to Standard 42 tells you a unit was tested for aesthetic reduction claims: chlorine taste and odor, and particulate class ratings for clarity. Certification to Standard 53 tells you it was tested for health effects claims, which is a different and stricter test regime. Both also cover material safety and structural integrity, so a certified unit has been checked for what it leaches and whether it holds pressure, not only for what it removes.

Certification is per claim, not a blanket

This is the part that catches buyers. A product certified to Standard 53 is not certified for every contaminant in that standard. It is certified for the specific claims it was tested for, and those claims are listed individually. A filter can carry a Standard 53 mark for cyst reduction and have no lead claim at all. Look up the model in the certifier listing and read the claim list rather than trusting a box that says certified.

The other standards you will meet

Standard 58 covers reverse osmosis systems, Standard 44 covers cation exchange water softeners, Standard 62 covers distillation and Standard 401 covers incidental contaminants such as certain pharmaceuticals. There is also a separate protocol used for PFAS reduction claims. Products are certified by several accredited bodies, not only one, so a mark from a different certifier against the same standard means the same thing.

Matching a standard to your problem

Start from what your water actually contains, not from the highest number on a box. If the complaint is chlorine taste on a municipal supply, Standard 42 is the relevant mark and paying for more is optional. If you have a lead service line or a cyst risk, you need a listed claim under Standard 53 for that specific contaminant. If the issue is hardness, no filter standard applies, because softening is a different job entirely.
