A retention tank is a holding vessel installed after a chemical injection point so the chemical has time to react with the water before it reaches the house. On a well system it is the piece that turns a chlorine pump from a dosing device into an actual treatment step, because disinfection and iron oxidation both depend on contact time rather than on dose alone.
Contact time is the whole point
When chlorine is injected into a pipe, the reactions that kill bacteria and convert dissolved iron and hydrogen sulfide into filterable solids do not happen instantly. In a bare pipe run, water reaches the tap in seconds and much of the chemical is still unreacted, which shows up as a chlorine smell at the fixtures and iron still passing through the filter. A retention tank holds a volume of water so that each parcel spends minutes rather than seconds with the chemical. Sizing works backwards from the peak flow rate of the house and the contact time the treatment company specifies for your water chemistry.
Baffles, and why an empty tank underperforms
A plain tank with an inlet and an outlet suffers from short circuiting: water finds the shortest path from one port to the other and leaves early, so the average contact time on paper is far better than the actual contact time for much of the flow. Purpose-built retention tanks use an internal baffle or a diffuser tube to force water down one side and back up the other, which is why a proper retention tank is not simply a spare pressure tank. If someone has plumbed a bare storage tank in as a retention vessel, that is where to look when disinfection results are inconsistent.
Where it sits in the treatment train
The usual order on a well is pump, then the injection point, then the retention tank, then the filtration that catches whatever the chemical produced, then the pressure tank and the house. Iron and sulfur oxidized in the tank arrive at a backwashing carbon or catalytic filter as solids and are removed there, and residual chlorine is stripped by that same carbon bed so the house does not taste it. Get the order wrong, for example by putting the retention tank after the filter, and you will filter water that has not reacted yet and then deliver chlorinated water to the taps.
Living with one
Retention tanks accumulate sediment and oxidized iron sludge at the bottom, so they need a drain valve at the base and a periodic flush, typically once or twice a year depending on iron load. Some models include an automatic air release because chemical reactions and dissolved gases build a pocket at the top that reduces the effective volume. Check the tank for external corrosion where it sits on a concrete floor, keep the injection point serviceable, and confirm the chemical feed pump is actually stroking rather than airlocked. Questions people ask about retention tank
Is a retention tank the same as a pressure tank?
No. A pressure tank stores pressurized water so the pump does not run constantly. A retention tank provides reaction time for injected chemicals and is usually baffled inside to prevent short circuiting.
Do I need a retention tank with a peroxide system?
Yes, for the same reason as with chlorine. Peroxide needs contact time to oxidize iron and sulfur, though the required time differs and the system supplier should specify it for your water.
How often should a retention tank be drained?
Once or twice a year is typical, more often on high iron wells. Sludge at the bottom reduces the working volume and can carry over to the filter after a heavy draw.
Can a retention tank be installed outdoors?
Only where it cannot freeze, since a full tank left below freezing will split. In cold climates it belongs in a basement or a heated utility building.
