Retention tanks, also called contact tanks, exist to give an injected chemical time to finish reacting before the water reaches a filter or a tap. Chlorine and hydrogen peroxide do not work instantly, and without a tank holding the water for a set period the reaction is still happening in your plumbing.
Contact time is the specification that matters
When chlorine oxidizes dissolved iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide, or kills bacteria, it needs a period in contact with the water at a given dose. A retention tank supplies that period by holding a volume of water between the injection point and the next stage. Size it against the household's peak flow, not its average: the water drawn during a shower and a washing machine cycle together must still spend the required period inside the tank, or you are filtering water that has not finished reacting.
It is not a pressure tank
A pressure tank stores water under a captive air charge so the pump does not start on every tap. A retention tank is a plain vessel, usually with a baffle or a dip tube arrangement that forces water to travel the long way through rather than shortcutting from inlet to outlet. Confusing the two is a common and expensive mistake: an unbaffled tank plumbed straight through gives a fraction of the contact time you paid for, because the incoming water finds the outlet and leaves.
Where it sits in the system
The usual order on a well is pump, then the injection point where the chemical metering pump doses, then the retention tank, then the filter that removes what the chemical created, then the pressure tank and the house. Oxidized iron and elemental sulfur are particles by the time they leave the tank, and they need a backwashing filter or a carbon bed to take them out. Leaving residual chlorine to reach the taps is the other reason for a carbon stage last in line.
Maintenance and why the well matters
Tanks accumulate sludge from the oxidized solids that settle, so they need a drain at the base and periodic flushing, and larger vessels need an access port. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody else is verifying that your dosing and contact time are correct. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark, which is the argument for testing after the system is running as well as before.

Big enough that water still gets the required contact period at the household's peak draw, not its average. Undersizing shows up as untreated water during busy periods.
Do I need a retention tank with an ultraviolet system?
No. Ultraviolet disinfects as water passes the lamp, so there is nothing to hold. It needs clear, filtered water instead, which is a pretreatment requirement.
Can I use my pressure tank as a retention tank?
No. A pressure tank has an internal bladder and no baffling, so water shortcuts through it. Chemical contact needs a dedicated vessel designed for the flow path.
