When somebody says water treatment tank they could mean any of four completely different vessels, and confusing them leads to buying the wrong part or servicing the wrong thing. A media tank holds treatment material, a brine tank holds salt, a retention tank buys contact time for a chemical, and a storage tank banks finished water. Each has its own failure modes and its own service interval.
The media tank, the one people picture
This is the tall fiberglass reinforced vessel with a control valve on top, and it is the working part of a softener, a carbon filter, an iron filter or a neutralizer. Inside is a bed of media sitting on a gravel underbed with a riser tube and a distributor at the bottom. Water flows down through the bed in service and upward during backwash, which lifts and rinses the bed to drain. The tank itself rarely fails; what fails is the media inside it, which exhausts, fouls or channels, and the valve on top, which has moving seals.
The brine tank, which only softeners have
A brine tank is the shorter plastic drum beside a softener that holds salt and the water that dissolves it into brine for regeneration. Inside there is usually a safety float to stop overflow and often a brine well protecting the float from the salt. The common faults are all mechanical: a salt bridge, where a hard crust forms above an empty cavity so the softener draws no brine at all, and a mush layer at the bottom that blocks the pickup. Both look fine from the outside while the softener quietly delivers hard water.
The retention or contact tank
Where a system injects a chemical, usually chlorine or peroxide for iron, sulfur or bacteria, the oxidation reaction needs time before filtration. A retention tank is simply a large vessel that holds the dosed water long enough for that reaction to complete, and it is sized on how long the chemistry needs rather than on how much water the household uses. Skipping it, or fitting one too small, is a classic reason an injection system underperforms: the chemical is being filtered out before it has finished working.
The storage tank for treated water
Reverse osmosis produces water slowly, so whole house installations bank permeate in an atmospheric storage tank and pump it back into the house on demand. Under sink units use a small pressurized bladder tank instead, where compressed air behind a diaphragm pushes water out to the faucet. Both need attention: the atmospheric type should be sanitized and its vent kept clean, and the pressurized type loses its air charge over time, which shows up as a weak trickle at the faucet even though the membrane is fine.
Telling them apart on a service call
Look at the top. A control valve with a drain line and a bypass means a media tank. A lid you lift by hand with salt inside means a brine tank. A plain vessel with an inlet and an outlet and no valve, sitting after an injection pump, means retention. A vessel with a fitting on one end and a Schrader air valve means a pressurized storage tank. How long does the media inside a treatment tank last?
The tank outlives the media by many years, and replacement intervals depend on the media type and how loaded the incoming water is rather than on the vessel.
Why is my brine tank full of water?
Standing water above the normal brine level usually means a blocked injector, a stuck drain line or a float that is not shutting off, all of which stop proper regeneration.
Can I reuse an old tank with new media?
Often yes, if the vessel is sound and the distributor and riser are intact, which makes a media change considerably cheaper than a full system replacement.
Does a retention tank need cleaning?
Yes, oxidized iron and sulfur settle out inside it, so periodic draining and flushing is part of keeping an injection system working.
