Scale inhibitor water treatment does not take the hardness out of your water. It changes how calcium and magnesium behave so they stop cementing themselves to hot metal and pipe walls. That is a genuinely useful thing, and it is a different thing from softening, which is the distinction most sales copy blurs and most disappointed buyers discover afterwards.
Know your hardness before you choose
The US Geological Survey defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium measured as calcium carbonate, with soft water at 0 to 60 mg/L, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above 180. Inhibition performs best in the moderate to hard range and is stretched in very hard water, where the sheer mineral load overwhelms it. Test first. It also tells you what to expect afterwards: an inhibitor leaves the measured hardness exactly where it was, so a test after installation reading the same number is the system working as designed, not failing.
Template assisted crystallization
TAC is the most credible of the inhibition technologies for household use. Water passes through a bed of polymer beads whose surfaces act as nucleation templates. Hardness forms microscopic crystals on those templates and releases into the flow as suspended particles that will not adhere to pipe or heater surfaces. There is no salt, no electricity, no backwash and no drain, which makes it attractive where a softener is impractical or where a septic system rules out brine discharge. The media bed is a consumable with a multi-year life, and it needs protecting from sediment, chlorine and iron according to the maker's stated limits.
Polyphosphate and electronic devices
Polyphosphate sequestering works by binding hardness ions so they stay in solution, and it is commonly used in small inline cartridges ahead of a water heater or a coffee machine. It is cheap, it works within its dose range, and it is a consumable that must be replenished. Electronic and magnetic descalers clamp on the pipe and claim to alter crystal behavior with a field. They remove nothing, results reported by users are inconsistent, and no serious installer sizes a house around one. If you try one, keep a before and after record of actual scale in a kettle rather than trusting the feel of the water.
What you keep and what you give up
You keep protection for the water heater, the boiler, the tankless coil and the pipe runs, plus the minerals in your drinking water and no salt in the waste stream. You give up everything that depends on removing hardness: soap will not lather any more freely, glassware will still spot, shower doors will still film over, and laundry will feel no softer. Does a scale inhibitor soften water?
