HPC testing: what a heterotrophic plate count tells you about your water

HPC testing, the heterotrophic plate count, measures how many general purpose bacteria in a water sample will grow into visible colonies on a nutrient plate. It is not a test for a specific pathogen and a high result is not proof of illness risk. It is best read as a housekeeping indicator: a measure of how much bacterial life your plumbing and treatment equipment are supporting.

What the number actually counts

The lab incubates a measured volume of your water on a growth medium and counts the colonies that appear. What grows is the broad population of heterotrophic bacteria, the ordinary environmental organisms that live on organic carbon and are present in essentially all water that is not sterile. The count depends heavily on the method, the medium and the incubation time and temperature used, which is why two labs can return different figures for the same water and why HPC results are compared against your own history rather than against someone else's.

Why HPC is not a safety test

Coliform and E. coli testing is what answers the question of fecal contamination, and that is the test a household orders after a flood, a well repair or a bad taste. HPC does not distinguish harmless soil bacteria from anything of concern, so a high plate count on its own does not mean the water is unsafe and a low one does not mean it is safe. When a rising count is telling you something useful

The classic case is regrowth on treatment equipment. Carbon filters, softener resin beds and dead legs of unused pipe all offer surface area and trapped organic carbon, and warm stagnant water on them grows a biofilm that sheds into the flow. A jump in HPC downstream of a filter compared with upstream is a strong hint that the media is overdue for change or that the housing needs sanitizing. Point of entry samples versus point of use samples, taken the same morning, localize the problem to a specific stretch of the system.

Sampling so the result means anything

Bacterial samples are ruined by sloppy collection more often than by anything in the water. Use the sterile bottle the lab supplies and do not rinse it. Do not touch the inside of the cap. Sample from a clean tap with the aerator removed and any hose disconnected. Note whether you flushed the line first or took a first draw, because the two answer different questions. Get the bottle to the lab inside its stated holding time and keep it cold in transit, or the count you receive describes the journey rather than the well.

Questions people ask about hpc testing

Is there a federal limit for HPC in private well water?

Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no enforceable HPC limit applies to a household supply. Use the result as a trend indicator.

Does a high HPC result mean my water will make me sick?

Not by itself. HPC counts general environmental bacteria, not pathogens. Order coliform and E. coli testing to answer the safety question directly.

Can my water filter raise the HPC count?

Yes. Carbon media and softener resin give bacteria surface area and trapped organic carbon to grow on, so counts downstream of neglected media often rise.

How should I collect an HPC sample?
